ABANDONING SHIP - Poem

ABANDONING SHIP

(Copyright 2019, by Dave Kiffer)

You never imagined it this way,
It was always a dramatic exit
A sudden cold rush of water
Like every Titanic movie,
Lifting your head upwards
Against the steel bulkhead,
The ship turning turtle,
You fighting through it all.

Instead it is more gradual,
Deciding what to leave behind,
The stepping off the trans0m,
The slow row across water,
The landing on a shore
From which you will never return.
