ABYSSINIA - Poem

ABYSSINIA

Copyright 2019, by Dave Kiffer

In all the old familiar places,
Yes, it’s a pun, and a bad one,
But that was how you left me

With a desire to meet again
In that familiar, inevitable
Better home a-waiting

And yet, maybe not, because
My faith was never yours,
My prayers are unsheathed

I’m not sure what my faith is.
It doesn’t breathe in hymnals,
It has no regular pew,

It doesn’t come with hot dish,
And it certainly won’t attend
A seven a.m. scripture klatch

So, I guess it is not faith
Unless doing right by others
Qualifies as dogma

Which I don’t suppose it does
In a world where we all
Have to take sides
