Displacement - Poem

 Displacement

(Copyright 2020, by Dave Kiffer)

We look at the large ships,
Wonder how they can float,
Or why the tall, narrow ones
Don’t tip over in heavy seas

And we both know
That Bernoulli’s principal
Keeps a heavier-than-air jet
Humming in the invisible sky

Yet even that knowledge
Seems insufficient
To help us ignore
What our eyes tell us

That there's a 'not empty' space
Where we have to go on faith
Or science to explain
What we can't believe

And why the empty space left
When someone you love leaves
Always seems to weigh double
What they did, when they were here
