NICKEY WAY - Poem

NICKEY WAY

(Copyright 2019, by Dave Kiffer)

I often wonder
How long you kept,
Sparkled to your heart,
That three-year-old girl,
Her wavy, dirty-blond hair
And that gingham dress
Caught in the wind
Rising above the knees.

Was she still there
Ninety years later
Her knees still scabbed
But the heart now calm
When all that was ahead
Had receded softly into dust?
