Scenic Overlooks - Poem

 SCENIC OVERLOOKS

We stop for them,
Although the roses
They illuminate
Are too distant
To smell

Even better
When there is
A historical marker
To contextualize
The winding river

They are more
Than leg stretchers,
More than a chance
To void our bowels
In a concrete john

They are a chance
To remember
That the road is long
And that it misses
All the best parts

But almost exactly a decade later there was another crash in Boca de Quadra, barely a mile away from where Gillam's plane when down. This one involved Ellis Hall , the multimillionaire owner of Texas-based Condor Petroleum. Hall was on a vacation with his wife, two daughters and a family friend to Southeast Alaska. After visiting Juneau, Ellis was piloting his de Havilland DH 104 Dove, a large twin engine plane.   PIVOT   My mother used to remind me That the world didn’t revolve around me But she was wrong   I am the center of my world Everything revolves around the fulcrum I am the pivot point   Each of us is The center of our worlds It could not be otherwise   But that means that there Are eight billion fulcrums To consider   The rain that is falling on me today Is falling on everyone else Including you   That is what she meant That, and, the weather will be better, Tomorrow.
