Pacific Wings shuts down

PETERSBURG - Pacific Wings has shut down operations because of losses from the COVID 19 pandemic. The company, which has operated since the mid 1980s, said the pandemic related travel restrictions wiped out the company's business. THE PETERSBURG PILOT

Residents left at dock

HOONAH - A group of residents was denied passage on the state ferry Tazlina after AMHS limited the number of passengers because of social distancing requirements. The Tazlina limited ridership to 80 passengers rather than the normal 240 at the recommendation of state health officials, but word was late getting to the Hoonah residents, several of whom were trying to get home in time for high school graduation. 300 turn out for vigil

SITKA - More than 300 residents turned out last week for a vigil commemorating the death of George Floyd. The group stood silent in Totem Square for more than seven minutes. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL

SISD goes to 4 day week

THORNE BAY - The Southeast Island School District has approved a four-day school week for the 2020-21 school year. Opening day is set for August 31. THE PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND POST

Residents may get checks

SKAGWAY - With the community looking at ways to use more than $7 million in COVID disasters relief funds, it has been suggested that each resident receive a check each month for the next year.  The official population of the town is just over 1,100, but officials say the actually year round population is lower than that. The borough recently discussed how to determine which residents should get the checks in order to help the economy survive. THE SKAGWAY NEWS

WHITEHORSE - Tennis Yukon is back in operation, with social distancing requirements of course. Players will have to use hand sanitizer, not gather in groups, and sign a waiver because the group's insurance will not cover COVID 19 claims. Yerkes is principal of the year

JUNEAU - Molly Yerkes, the Dzantik’i Heeni Middle School, was named Region 5 Principal of the Year for 2020 by the Alaska Association of Secondary School Principals on Friday. Yerkes has been principal at DHMS for the past 10 years. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE

COVID extends foreign exchange trips

SITKA - Four foreign exchange students are hunkering down in Sitka, awaiting a time when they can return home safely.  Nicole Christensen of Denmark, Kanish Djarker of India, Cleomara Sande of Mozambique and Mihaela Motca of Romania are still in town, even through school ended in late May. Sande tried to return home in early April, but she was sent back to Sitka after getting as far as Washington, DC. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL

Bad owners!

JUNEAU - Three public areas have been temporarily closed because people are not cleaning up after their dogs. The borough says that Dimond Park, Field 2 at Melvin Park and land at the top of Gold Street have all been closed to canines. More areas may be closed if the problem persists. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE

No new positives

CRAIG - There have been no new cases of COVID 19 on Prince of Wales since April 13, according to City of Craig Emergency Operations Center.  As of May 27, there have been 182 tests on the island. THE PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND POST

Border reopening planned

WHITEHORSE - Officials are working on the protocols for reopening the border between the Yukon Territory and British Columbia. They say the border will likely reopen on July 1. THE WHITEHORSE DAILY STAR
