- Alaska is the national leader in internet slowness. Officials say
that Alaska's average internet speed - 20 megabits per second - is the
slowest in the country. The national average is 59 mbps. Maryland has

Still planning on parade
HAINES
-- Officials are moving ahead with planning for the 4th of July Parade.
The Chamber of Commerce says this year's parade will take place but
will be "pandemic appropriate." The parade theme will be a tribute to

Social network no help
TERRACE
- Officials say a jet skier on the Skeena River is lucky to be alive,
no thanks to Facebook. When the young man's was out of fuel and lost,
his situation was posted on Facebook and there were more than 700
reposts and 150 responses. Officials say the posts were confusing and
contradictory. But a rescue helicopter managed to locate him anyway. THE

Hospital construction on time
WRANGELL
- Construction on the new hospital is on time and on budget, according
to local officials. More than 40 workers are on site and interior
framing is complete in two of the four areas under construction. THE

COVID plaguing local businesses
WHITEHORSE
- The Chamber of Commerce says that a recent study shows just how much
the COVID 19 Pandemic is hurtling local businesses. The survey
determined that 80 percent to the businesses reported recent losses and
nearly half of those businesses pegged the losses at more than 50

Kake road project on tap
PETERSBURG
- Construction on the Kake Access project will begin in July, according
to the State Department of Transportation. The project will add 13
miles of new road to 21 miles of logging road and create an access road from Kake to 12 mile Beach northwest of Petersburg. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
Rail services returns
PRINCE
RUPERT - Via Rail is resuming its Jasper to Prince Rupert run the first
week in July. The run - which includes a stopover in Prince George -
will not have the popular dome car and there will be no food service on
board. The number of passengers will be restricted in order to encourage

Residents to get checks
SKAGWAY
- The Borough Assembly has decided to give each year round resident up
to $1,000 a month for the next several months to help the community get
through the upcoming winter. The funds are coming out of the community's
COVID disaster relief funds. THE SKAGWAY NEWS
Boro wants to tap local perm fund
HAINES -
The borough is planning to ask voters to allow it use $450,000 from the
community permanent fund to cover school debt service payments that
were vetoed by Gov. Dunleavy. The amount would represent a little less

Farmers Market reopens
TERRACE
- The Skeena Valley Farmers Market reopened last week for the first
time since April. Officials say the "on-line" market that operated for

- Bob Daffe is the most recent inductee in the Yukon Sports Hall of
Fame. For 50 years, Daffe has promoted and led the territory's canoe,

Tourney's raise money
WRANGELL
- Muskeg Meadows hosted two golf tournaments last weekend. The annual
Stikine Sportsman Association Tournament raised $730 and the Greg Scheff

Clerk becomes judge
PETERSBURG
- Rachael Newport is the new Petersburg magistrate judge. Newport has
been the court clerk for the past two years. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
Shop local, except for paving
PRINCE
RUPERT - The city council is promoting a "shop local" campaign to boost
the economy but it recently chose a Kitimat company to do a lucrative
repaving road repaving project. The reason? The Kitimat company's bid
was 25 percent lower than one by a local company. THE NORTHERN VIEW
