- The North Words writers symposium will be virtual this year. The
workshop, set for the first week of August usually brings up to 40

Artists get grants
SITKA
- Two local women have been awarded artist grants by the Rasmuson
Foundation. Jewelry creator Jennifer Younger received a fellowship award
of $18,000. Choreographer Sarah Camper received a project award of

River to be flood mapped

New exhibit on women's suffrage

- Alaska women's suffrage is the focus of the new exhibit at the Nolan
Center. Among the historical people featured is Tillie Paul Tamaree. a

- The Yukon Territory was cut off from the Outside world for several
hours last week. A landslide in Northern British Columbia cut a fiber
line and led to the loss of internet, phone and cable TV service from 7

Teen's app goes viral
PRINCE
RUPERT - Prince Rupert teen Brendan Eshom, has made a hit with his
newly released ‘Sm’algyax Word’ software application reaching the Apple
App Stores “Top Charts” on July 13, after the weekend release just two

PIA plans duplex
PETERSBURG
- The Petersburg Indian Association plans on using $900,000 in federal
grant money to build a duplex for low income native individuals to

Assembly to seek public input
HAINES
- The borough assembly will ask members of the public to weigh on what
it wants to see to in a Borough Manager. The Assembly has fired four

Poor baby!
SITKA
- Fireworks on the Fourth of July were too much for Phoebe. The 4-pound
chihuahua escaped from her Baranof Street home and was missing for
three days before a passerby heard whining near the rocks at Crescent

Campground reopens to non residents
TERRACE
- The Ferry Island Campground will now be open to out of Province
visitors. Social distancing protocols must still be followed. THE

Fall school plans made
HAINES
- School officials are looking at having students in the classroom this
fall, but with a compressed schedule. Besides the in person classes,
the district will focus on small groups of students and mask wearing.

Hot food returns to ferry
HAIDA
GWAII - Packaged food items and limited hot food services are now
available on the BC Ferries route between Haida Gwaii and Prince Rupert.
The ferry system is also reopening some of its terminal food services

Railway planning continues
WHITEHORSE
- The Alaska-to-Alberta Railway Project is moving ahead. Officials hope
to run a railway connection from Alberta through the Northwest and
Yukon territories and connect with the Alaska Railroad. The proposed

False alarm
KITIMAT
- Search and Rescue officials reported they spent several hours
investigating the report of an empty kayak found on the Kitimat River.
It turned out the kayak had been lost sometime before but the owner had
