Mall ghost probed

PRINCE RUPERT - Paranormal North Coast BC has been investigating reports of ghostly activity near the PF Bistro in the Centre Mall. The bistro is near a spot in the mall where a man committed suicide in 1975 after attempting to rob a sporting goods store. Bistro employees have reported hearing noises, seeing dishes move and a ghostly appartition the past few weeks. School Days #1

SKAGWAY - The school district is looking at a three-part system of learning this Fall. If there are no COVID 19 cases within a 14 day period, classes will take place normally with social distancing. If there are a small number of cases, masks will be required. If there is a large number of cases, classes will be on-line. THE SKAGWAY NEWS

Gallery fire was arson

HAINES - A woman has been charged with setting a fire that significantly damaged the Sea Wolf Gallery and some of its artwork. Officials say the woman is also suspected in at least one other recent fire in the community. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

SITKA - The reopening plan for local schools this fall emphasizes as much in class time as possible, officials say. For example, although the class day will be shorter to reduce exposure potential, students at Baranof Elementary will have in person classes five days a week. Islands get first COVID case

HAIDA GWAII - The Islands has reported its first case of COVID 19. Any resident returning from elsewhere is now required to quarantine for 14 days, non essential travel between communities has been halted and both Skidegate and Old Massett now have curfews between 9:30 pm and 6 am. Lifelong Southeaster dies

WRANGELL - Residents are remembering Barbara Crabtree, 82, a lifelong Southeast resident who worked in canneries and restaurants. Besides Wrangell, she lived in Petersburg and Ketchikan. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL

Fire station costs rise

QUEEN CHARLOTTE - The cost for a new fire station has jumped by nearly $150,000. Officials say that the extra costs are because of delays related to COVID 19. THE HAIDA GWAII OBSERVER

Trail upgrade nearly complete

PETERSBURG - Upgrades to the Raven Trail are about 80 percent done, with construction expected to be completed by the end of the summer. The project, by the Forest Service, began last year. THE PETERSBURG PILOT

Invasive crabs found

SKIDEGATE - Officials say that European Green Crabs have been found in the Islands. The crabs are considered an invasive species and can wipe out other species. THE HAIDA GWAII OBSERVER

Driver leads cops home

JUNEAU - Police followed a speeding driver to an abandoned home in the Valley. At the home, on Nugget Drive, they arrested five other people for probation violations. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE

Free checks shrink

SKAGWAY - The borough says that the corona virus relief checks that each resident will get will drop from $1,000 a month in June and July to $500 a month in August. The reason? More people have applied than expected. The cut is being made to ensure there is enough money to keep the program going until December when the money was expected to run out. THE SKAGWAY NEWS

Jackson faults firing

HAINES  - Prominent Native artist Nathan Jackson has waded into the controversy over the recent firing of Sheldon Museum director Helen Alten. When asked about the firing, Jackson said it was a "big mistake." THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

Too close encounter

JUNEAU - Three people suffered  injuries when their skiff was struck by a whale in Auke Bay late in June. One  person was hospitalized. The family in the skiff said they saw the whale surface in front of them and killed their boat motor but were unable to avoid the whale, which appeared to be uninjured by the encounter. New air station commander

SITKA -  Air Station Sitka has a new commander with Commander Brian McLaughlin taking over for Capt. Michael Frawley. Frawley is being posted to the 17th District Office in Juneau. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL
