Residents concerned about lodge guests

PETERSBURG - Residents have expressed concern that local lodges have been allowing guests to shop in local stores on the way from the airport to the lodges. They say that would be a violation of the Governor's travel mandates if the visitors do not have a negative test result. THE PETERSBURG PILOT

Local unemployment spikes

HAINES - In May, Haines had the highest unemployment rate in the state. More than 22 percent of the workforce was out of work, up from the normal 6.7 percent. Overall, the state rate was 12.6 percent. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

Task force looks at school reopening

SITKA - The Smart Start Task Force has begun meeting to plan for the reopening of Sitka schools in the fall. Some 40 people are on the planning committee. Among the options is a proposal to divide classes into sections that would alternate physical school attendance with remote computer classes. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL

Airport ferry turns 50

PRINCE RUPERT - Before 1962, people wanting to fly out of the community had to travel all the way to Sandspit in Haida Gwaii to catch a flight, In the mid 1960s, the Prince Rupert airport was built on nearby Digby Island and an airport ferry was eventually built to carry passengers and vehicles. Missing stained glass found?

SKAGWAY - In 2010, descendants of the owners of the Seattle based stained glass company Suess and Smith began looking for a panel that was made more than 100 years and until the 1980s was located in the Frye Hotel. It is now believed the panel may be in storage somewhere in Skagway. Diane White, proprietor of Skagway Sculpture and Flower Garden, suspects she now owns the window may be in some boxes currently stored in the operation's restroom. THE SKAGWAY NEWS

Program would help homeless, restaurants

JUNEAU - The community is looking at putting a $1 million in federal relief funds into a local Juneau Cares program that not only feeds the homeless but pays local restaurants to provide the meals therefore putting unemployed restaurant workers back on the job. The proposal has received support at the borough assembly where it is being called a "win-win" scenario. Wolf attack was predatory

PORT EDWARD - The senior citizen attacked by a wolf in late May has been released from the hospital. Officials say the attack, one of three in the past 20 years, was predatory in nature and a sign that local wolves are becoming more aggressive. THE TERRACE STANDARD

July 4th games and booths 'virtual'

PETERSBURG - The community theme for this year's scaled back Fourth Of July celebration is "Stay Strong Together." One of the main differences this year will be "virtual" games and booths rather than the in-person ones. THE PETERSBURG PILOT

Fishermen join slime line

WRANGELL - Local fishermen have been volunteering their time to staff the city's lone operating seafood processor, Sea Level Seafoods. The company has been having trouble finding workers and between 8 and 16 fishermen have been coming in to help process crab. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL

Schools boss fired

PRINCE RUPERT - The school board for Prince Rupert has fired the superintendent. Dr. Irene LaPierre had been on the job for two years. Neither she nor the board commented on the action which took place earlier this month. THE NORTHERN VIEW

Family hits the road

KITIMAT - The Corona Virus did not stop the Tse family from its yearly adventure: Biking from Kitimat to Terrace., a distance of just about 40 miles. This year it took the family 10 hours, but they say they only spent 5.5 hours actually on their bikes, the rest of the time was spent making stops along the way, including a length swim at Onion Lake. Restaurants - Hard to find workers

PRINCE RUPERT - Local restaurant owners say they having trouble finding staff as they reopen from the COVID 19 closure. The are blaming the CERB (Canada Emergency Response Benefit) of more than $2,000 a month, which has now been extended from 16 weeks to 24 weeks. THE NORTHERN VIEW

Bear killed, homeowner fined

HAINES - A female bear was shot on Highland Drive after becoming habituated to garbage. A resident was cited for having an unsecured compost pile that led the bear's demise. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

Landfill bridge to be replaced

STEWART - The district is looking to replace the old wooden bridge that provides access the local landfill. The cost of replacing the Barachaz Bridge is just under $200,000. THE TERRACE STANDARD
