Commemoration pole to be raised
TERRACE
- In early September a commemoration and healing totem pole honoring
missing and murdered indigenous woemen will be raised on at Highway 16
pullout on Kitsumkalum territory west
of Terrace. The 24-foot totem is being carved by Mike Dangeli of

Just Haines being Haines
HAINES
- Paul Nelson was the first place winner in the Fourth of July Reverse
Parade. But now the Haines police have cited him for operating his float
without a drivers license. Nelson says
he drove his float on private property, the Southeast
Alaska Fairgrounds. He said the ticket he got is in response to his

Racism committee proposed
JUNEAU
- The borough assembly is considering establishing a Racism Review
Committee to examine future city legislation for potential systematic
racism. City leaders say they are responding

- Little Norway is on track for its wettest summer ever. After two
months, it is already the 4th wettest on record with nearly 12.5 inches
of rain. The all-time record was 15.74

New cargo facility planned
TERRACE
- A $12 million railroad cargo transfer facility is planned for the
former Skeena Celluslose sawmill site on Keith Avenue. The "transload"
facility will allow for shipping containers
to be transferred back and forth between trains and trucks. THE TERRACE

Lodge, tribe at odds over opening
HAIDA
GWAII - The Queen Charlotte Fishing Lodge at Naden Harbour has reopened
for business despite a continued call the Council of the Haida Nation
to keep Haida Gwaii closed to visitors
during the COVID 19 pandemic. Lodge officials say they are protecting
the community at large by bringing guests by helicopter directly from

Subsistence program gets grant
WRANGELL
- A local program has received a $4,500 grant to develop a food
security program. Wrangell's Subsidence Giving Project is being
spearheaded by Kassee Schlotzhauer and will provide
subsistence hunting and gathering for those in the community that can

- A group of six Catholic nuns from Poland and Brazil caused a bit of
stir in Northern BC last week when reports began surfacing on Social
Media that they were part of a sex trafficking
ring searching for local children to kidnap. Church officials says the
nuns - who visited Kitimat, Prince Rupert and Burns Lake - were indeed
nuns on vacation who just wanted to see the ocean and enjoy nature. THE

- Last week, Theater in the Rough performed what was believed to the
first outdoor audience attended theater in the country since the
beginning of the COVID 19 shutdown. Using the
stage at Savikko Park's Pioneer Pavilion, the troupe presented

- A local man was fined $345 for throwing a box of cereal at a bear on
Highway 16. A passerby saw the action and reported it to the Mounties

- The borough says that it will hold election poling in the community
gym to provide enough space for social distancing. Mail in and absentee

Borough looks at land sales
HAINES
- The Borough government is looking selling some land to boost the
funding in the borough permanent fund so that the fund can be used to
help pay off school bond debt that was recently
vetoed by Gov. Dunleavy. The borough is considering selling land in
Portage Cove, Excursion Inlet and the northeast side of Mount Ripley.

Alcohol leads to crash, fire
KITIMAT
- Two people are in the hospital with serious but not life threatening
injuries after a car crashed off Dyke Road and caught fire. Police say
alcohol appears to have been a factor
