Canadian haze? Nyet!

HAINES - It's not unusual for the Haines area to see some haze from summer fires in Canada, but this year's haze is from a lot farther away. Officials say that some unusual atmospheric conditions in the jet stream have brought haze from fires in Siberia, more than 3,500 miles to the west. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS 

Bear trashes pizza delivery car

JUNEAU - A local pizza delivery person had an unwelcome visitor last week. A black bear broke into his car and destroyed the interior even though there were no pizzas in the car at the time. Andrew Fairchild works for Juneau Pizza. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE

Six bears killed this summer

HAINES - Officials say that six brown bears have been killed in town since early June. Most recently two cubs were killed after their mother was found dead and officers felts the cubs were too young to survive on their own. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

LARPers pillaging

PRINCE RUPERT - LARPing brought a group of marauders and pillagers to the lawn of the Court House recently. Fifteen Live Action Role Players sponsored by Good Time Games enjoyed the socially distanced sword fights. THE NORTHERN VIEW

TV show to begin shooting

SITKA - Filming should begin later this month on the "Sitka TV Show" which is being developed by Driven Equation productions. The show's screenwriter, Stephen Morrison, recently completed three weeks of research in the community. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL

Skagway, Ketchikan working together

SKAGWAY - Local officials are working with Ketchikan officials to come up with a coordinated strategy toward the cruise industry going forward. Mayor Andrew Cremata says that all the cities in the region must work together otherwise one community's strategy could be completely undone by what goes on elsewhere. THE SKAGWAY NEWS

Page raises funds for crash victims

WRANGELL - A Go Fund Me page in memory of Sig and Helen Decker has raised more than $161,000 since the brother and sister died in a car crash in Petersburg two weeks ago. The United Fishermen of Alaska started the page to help with funeral expenses as well as to fund the new Wrangell Mariner's Memorial. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL

EOC says no masks, yet

HAINES - The Emergency Operations Center is holding off on a mask mandate for the time being. Officials say the unlikely to mandate masks in the community until there are more than 9 simultaneous active COVID cases. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

Mayor, council get raises

KITIMAT - The city mayor and councillors will get a salary boost next year. A survey determined Kitimat elected officials were making significantly less that counterparts in Prince Rupert and Terrace. With the raises, the Mayor will make $45,000, still less than the Rupert and Terrace mayors, but the councillors will make $25,000 which is more than the ones in Prince Rupert and Terrace. Salmon derby still fishing

JUNEAU - The 74th Golden North Salmon Derby is taking place this weekend with some adjustments because of the COVID 19 outbreak. Tickets will still have to be purchased but unlike in previous years won't need to be validated by staff in advance. Also fish will be turned in via fish nets and fishermen will no longer have to dock to do so, Last year's winner was a 24-pound king salmon. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE

Recycling rates may rise

PETERSBURG - Borough officials say they will have to raise rates in the recycling program over the next five years. One scenario, keeping the program operating as it currently does, would require 5 percent utility increases in each of the next five years.  THE PETERSBURG PILOT

Mayor's race contested

HAINES - There will be a contest for borough mayor this year. Former Assembly member Doug Olerud has filed to run against longtime incumbent mayor Jan Hill. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

Bear cub statue dedicated

TERRACE - A Kermode bear cub statue has been added to the George Little Park Playground. The statue commemorates the Terrace Kinsmen's contributions to the park over the years. THE TERRACE STANDARD

Traffic all snarled up

SITKA - Residents can expect delays on Sawmill Creek Road for the rest of the month. The ADOT Is resurfacing a section of the road for this summer but expects a major reconstruction project for 2021. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL.
