White whale stirs interest

- Photos of a white killer whale in Frederick Sound earlier this week
are spurring interest up and down the coast. The whale, a two-year old
named Tl'ut had been previously spotted in British Columbia. THE

Pool, hockey rink to reopen
TERRACE - The Terrace and District Aquatic Center is reopening in September. The Hidber ice sheet is also reopening on a limited base as the city moves to allow residents to use recreation facilities once again. THE TERRACE STANDARD

- August 14 was the 100th anniversary of the first airplanes to arrive
in Alaska from the outside world. The Black Wolf Squadron set down in

Fire damages gym roof
KITIMAT - A fire damaged the roof of one of the Mount Elizabeth High School gymnasiums last week. Onlookers said that roofers were patching a section of the roof when paper material caught fire and quickly spread to the inside of the roof. THE NORTHERN SENTINEL
No vote on police expansion
HAINES - Voters will not get to decide on policing outside the townsite in October. The borough assembly had planned to put the issue up to a vote this fall but has now decided not to have it on the ballot. An effort to levy taxes to pay for the service failed in the 2018 election. Former officer, city settle discrimination suit

- A former police officer has settled with the borough for slightly
more than $500,000. Mary Ferguson alleges she was discriminated against

WHITEHORSE - August 16 was the 100-year anniversary of the first planes to arrive in the Yukon Territory. The Black Wolf Squadron - a group of four de Havilland bi planes - were demonstrating the viability of long-distance air travel by flying from New York City to Nome, Alaska and back. Pandemic checks back up to $1,000
SKAGWAY
- The pandemic emergency assistance checks should be back up to $1,000
per person in September. The amount had dropped to $500 in August

KITIMAT - RCMP Staff Sgt. Graham Morgan has returned to the Kitimat detachment, this time as its leader. The 20-year Mountie previously spent 2014-2018 in Kitimat. THE NORTHERN SENTINEL
Smithereen NHLer retires
SMITHERS - One of the greatest hockey players in Smithers history has hung up his skates after 16 years in the NHL. Defenseman Dan Hamhuis, 37, retired after the Nashville Predators were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs last week. He and his wife and daughters are returning to Smithers to live.
