Juneau 'mudballers' told to stay home
SITKA - Because of the COVID situation, the Sitka Softball Association
cancelled the long-running popular Labor-Day "Mudball" tourney for this
year. A group of Juneau softballers didn't like that and petitioned the
city to allow them to come over and play anyway.

POW schools to open
CRAIG - School will start next week in all four districts on Prince of Wales. The Craig, Klawock, Hydaburg and Southeast
Island districts are all planning for multiple responses to the COVID
situation depending on how things go. Craig is anticipating 215
students,
Hydaburg 80 students, Klawock 125 and SISD 175 at its locations in
Hollis, Thorne Bay, Coffman Cove, Naukati, Whale Pass, Kasaan and Port

Business help cut
SKAGWAY - Business owners are unhappy with the reduction in the amount
of COVID relief money for businesses. Originally, the community had
planned to offer $2.5 million for business relief but cut that to $1
million when more money was needed to fund the individual

New ferry for Kitkatla
PRINCE RUPERT - A new ferry will be built to offer service between
Prince Rupert and Kitkatla, 36 miles to the south. The $57 million ferry
is expected to be operating by 2022. THE NORTHERN VIEW
Parade-gate continues
HAINES - Charges are still pending against a local man accused of
driving a parade float on the regional fair grounds while his driver's
license was canceled. A charge of driving without a licence was
dismissed, but two charges of reckless and negligent driving
were filed against Paul Nelson who says the charges are politically

Subs opened earlier this month near the Rain Country RV Park on JS
Drive. The business is operated by Falicia Farmer, Justin Seley and

Rock blocks road
WRANGELL - Traffic was blocked briefly on the Zimovia Highway last week
when a large rock fall on the road and shattered. The blockage was near

Pool to reopen
CRAIG - The Craig Aquatic Center is expected to reopen on September 1.
The pool has been closed since late March because of COVID 19 mandates.
During the closure the basins in the lap and wading pools were

Prominent leader dies
GITLAXT'AAMIKS - The Nisga'a leader who negotiated the landmark land
claims and self-government treaty in 2000 has died. Dr. Joseph Gosnell
was the first president of the Nisga’a Lisims Government after the

WRANGELL - The long-running saga of what to do with the old Wrangell
Institute property is back on the borough assembly calendar. A Native
boarding school operated on the site near Shoemaker Harbor until 1975.
