Fatal crash under investigation
PETERSBURG
- Police are still trying to determine the cause of a car crash that
killed four people on the Mitkof Highway last week. The dead have been
identified as Siguard
Decker, 21, and Helen Decker, 19, both of Wrangell, Ian Martin, 29 of

JUNEAU
- Police are investigating a report that a Switzer Creek Village
resident was bitten by a bear last week. The man had superficial wounds,
but the bite apparently occurred while he was asleep in his house. THE

Time to repaint the clock
SKAGWAY
- It's time to repaint Skagway's biggest clock. The 50-foot-wide,
75-foot-tall "clock" was painted on a rock wall above Skagway in
1898-1900 by pioneer jeweler Peter Kern and it has been repainted twice
before, in 1961 and 1982. THE SKAGWAY NEWS

HAIDA
GWAII - The West Coast Fishing Lodge is "shocked" that the BC
government has banned tourist visits to the Haida Gwaii and shut down
the lodge operation. Earlier, the Lodge had begun hosting guests despite
a non-essential travel ban to Haida Gwaii put in place by the Haida

-How hot was it in Sitka? July 31 the temperature reached 88 degrees at
the airport. That tied the all-time high ever for the community, set on

Salmon season 'disastrous'
HAINES - Local fishermen are saying the salmon returns and prices are the lowest they have been since 2005. Poor
chum salmon returns combined with an uncertain sockeye run have

Davis new principal
WRANGELL
- Longtime local teacher Bob Davis has been named the principal/lead
teacher at Wrangell High School and Stikine Middle School. Davis has
been a history and English teacher in town since 1994. THE WRANGELL

Dyea park to be upgraded
SKAGWAY
- The National Park Service is planning upgrades to the Dyea portion of
the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. Dyea is where the
Chilkoot Trail begins and proposed improvements include a parking area
at the trailhead, an adjacent day-use site and building a road segment
near the north end of the existing campground. THE SKAGWAUY NEWS
Mine worker killed
STEWART
- A worker at the Brucejack Mine was killed in an accident last week.
The accident occurred at a support facility on the surface and the
worker was taken to a hospital in Terrace where he later died. THE

Post office staff halved
PETERSBURG
- Residents are dealing with long wait times at the Petersburg post
office. Officials say that one employee recently retired and one
resigned leaving the facility very short staffed. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
Decisions, weather led to crash
WHITEHORSE
- Aviation officials say that a fatal plane crash last year was caused
by poor pilot decision making and deteriorating weather. The August 2019
crash killed the 24-year-old pilot and a 33-year-old mining geologist

Man medivaced after crash
JUNEAU
- An unidentified 39-year-old man was medivaced to Seattle in critical
condition after a car crash on the Mendenhall Loop Road last week.
Police said the man was ejected from his car after if left the road and
struck a telephone pole. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE
Sewer drains causing sink holes
KITIMAT
- An aging storm sewer drain system is causing headaches for a property
owner in the Whitesail neighborhood. Serena Sandhu said she wasn't told
about the problem when she purchased her house seven years ago, but now
she has had to deal with sinkholes for several years. Local officials
have patched up the holes, but they say they are still working on a

Masks, no travel on the school schedule
SKAGWAY
- The school committee is looking at requiring masks for all students
attending school beginning August 28. There will also be no school
travel during the fall term for sports or other activities. THE SKAGWAY
