Old pulp mill suit is political fodder 

PRINCE RUPERT – The Skeena Cellulose pulp mill has been closed for nearly two decades but a long-ago effort to reopen it has become part of the current political debate. Candidates for the New Democratic Party are claiming that current members of the Liberal Party benefited financially off the efforts that ended up costing Prince Rupert more than $3 million in legal fees. Long liner gets national award 

SITKA -= Local fisherman and executive director of the Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association Linda Behnken has been awarded $250,000 for her work in conservation and sustainable fishing. The award comes from the national Heinz Family Foundation for her efforts in opposition to large-scale industrial fishing and her support of small-boat fishermen. 

New morgue project dead 

HAINES – Looks like a proposed morgue will not be funded by CARES Act money after all. The Borough Assembly had originally planned to build a new morgue. Then it decided to retrofit a storage container. Now it has just decided to fix the single refrigerated room in the public safety building. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS 

COVID breaks out in homeless population 

JUNEAU – The community COVID status has been moved to high with more than 35 new cases discovered this past weekend. The majority of those cases, 24, were tied to a cluster in the community homeless population. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE 

Octoberfest today 

PETERSBURG – The 44th annual Octoberfest is taking place today. The Muskeg Maleriers event will feature 30 different booths but masks will be required and entrance and egress from the site will be controlled at the Parks and Rec community gym. THE PETERSBURG PILOT 

Rockslide closes road 

QUEEN CHARLOTTE – Access to the community was shut off for several hours last week when a large rockslide took out Oceanview Drive. Officials say it is not the first time a slide has covered the main access road and that a secondary road is needed. THE HAIDA GWAII OBSERVER 

 

“Speedy” the bear mourned 

 

HAINES – Locals are remembering a familiar brown bear sow named “Speedy.” Speedy, who was killed legally during the 2019 season, was believed to be 15 years old and had had 8 cubs. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS 

 

Suit against city tossed 

WRANGELL – Judge Kevin Miller has dismissed Kipha Valvoda lawsuit against the city of Wrangell. Valvoda had claimed the city officials had conspired to keep him from getting a job in town.  Miller dismissed the case because he said Valvoda did not comply with court orders that would have allowed the case to move forward. Mickleson looks back on decades with AP&T 

 

CRAIG – Greg Mickelson is winding down his decades long career with Alaska Power and Telephone, most of which was spent on Prince of Wales Island. Mickelson went to work for APT in 1978 and was on POW two years later. He is planning to retire in February as the VP for Alaska Operations, after 42 years with the company. Teacher gets national award 

LAXGALTS’AP – Dianna Rai, a teacher at the Alvin A. McKay Elementary school in the Nisga’a village of Laxgalts’ap in the Nass valley, has been awarded the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the award last week. Rai is a Nisga’a language teacher. THE NORTHERN VIEW 

Mitkof Blue Ribbon school 

 

PETERSBURG – Mitkof Middle School has been named one of 367 schools in America as a National Blue-Ribbon School by the US Department of Education. Schools were recognized for either their overall academic performance or their progress in closing student achievement gaps. THE PETERSBURG PILOT 

 

New fire rigs coming 

 

THORNHILL – The Thornhill Fire Department is getting a big makeover. In the next year, the department will get four new fire trucks – two engines and two tankers. They will replace vehicles in the department that are currently 25 years old. THE TERRACE STANDARD 

 

Manager process restarts 

 

HAINES – The borough assembly has restarted the process of seeking a new manager. The personnel committee will first meet to assess the job description and the position will be advertised. The borough clerk has been filing in since the previous manager was fired in May. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS 

 

Ferry workaround continues 

 

HOLLIS – With IFA operations shut down until at least November 1, the AHMS is providing some service to the island. Both the IFA ferries Prince of Wales and the Stikine are sidelined by major mechanical issues. THE PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND POST
