Lotsa people catching crabs
PETERSBURG -Salmon catches were down this year, but crab catches boomed in Southeast. Officials says that 192 crabbers brought in 5.81 million pounds of Dungeness crab this summer. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
Housing project moves ahead
QUEEN CHARLOTTE - Work has resumed on a modular low-income housing project. The contractor, Atco, had stopped work last year when mold and water damage was found in the units supplied to BC Housing by another contractor. THE HAIDA GWAII OBSERVER
'Bear' officer proposed
HAINES - The borough's "bear" task force has suggested hiring a seasonal public safety office to specifically address issues during the summer season. Bear related police calls skyrocketed this year, with more than 250 calls by September 1. There were only 41 calls last year. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS
School's head reprimanded
WRANGELL - The school has officially reprimanded School Superintendent Debbe Lancaster for taking an unauthorized trip to Juneau to buy school supplies in August in violation of a government ban on travel. Lancaster also drew the ire of the school board for telling the local media the Police Department had sent two officers to Ketchikan at the same time. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL
PSP still a problem
CRAIG - Advisories are still out warning residents to avoid shellfish, particularly butter clams at two local locations. Both Kasaan's Whale House Beach and Craig's False Island Boat Launch had elevated amounts of paralytic shellfish toxins in recent tests. THE PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND POST
That's a fast response cutter!
HOONAH - The response time was only minutes when the Coast Guard received a mayday call from the fishing vessel Reluctant last week. The cutter John McCormick was passing nearby when the call came in to help the grounded boat. The two crew members were evacuated, and the McCormick towed the Reluctant back to Hoonah. Community pool reopens
KITIMAT -The Sam Lindsay Aquatic Center will reopen on Oct. 5. The pool had been shut down because of COVID issues. The smaller Teach pool will remain closed as a structural issue is addressed. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL
Bear/human conflicts up
TERRACE - Conflicts between bears and humans have increased dramatically this year in Northwest B.C. Officials say that in a normal year there are between 300 and 500 reported conflicts, but half way through the fiscal year, more than 900 conflicts have been reported. Officials say that bears have been affected by a poor berry crop and lower than normal salmon runs. THE TERRACE STANDARD
Water advisory ends
PRINCE RUPERT - A month-long water quality "advisory" in the community has been lifted. Residents were cautioned about drinking tap water because heavy rainfall had caused numerous landslides in the public watershed and a high level of "turbidity" in the water. THE NORTHERN VIEW

Trooper promoted, awarded
CRAIG - State trooper Robert Jensen had a very good day recently. First, he was promoted to Sergeant. Then he was placed in charge of the Prince of Wales POW post. Then he was given a lifesaving award for his role in responding to a chain saw accident in 2018. THE PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND POST
Voluntary COVID plan planned
PETERSBURG - The community is hoping to put in place a "voluntary" COVID 19 plan in the next few weeks. Details of the plan have not been released. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
Pandemic costs city $1.8 million
WHITEHORSE - Responding to the COVID 19 pandemic is expected to cost the city approximately $1.8 million. Officials say those costs will create an overall $500,000 budget deficit in 2020. THE WHITEHORSE DAILY STAR
