AMHS leaves Wrangell high and dry

WRANGELL - Residents are angry at the proposed winter ferry schedule that drops service to two visits total. They note that the Marine Highway will bypass Wrangell on its runs between Ketchikan and Petersburg. The ferry system says it is too time consuming to go to Wrangell. Skagway has first COVID cases

SKAGWAY - Skagway was recently noted in a national news stories as one of the few boroughs or counties in the country with no positive COVID cases. No more. The community reported five cases last week. THE SKAGWAY NEWS

Shellfishery shut down

PRINCE RUPERT - Shellfish harvesting in the Prince Rupert, Kitimat and Haida Gwaii areas has been shut down because of high levels of marine toxins. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans says that in the past four years, there have been significant increases of biotoxin blooms around the province during the winter months. THE NORTHERN VIEW

Board: Don't buy Ocean Beauty

KITIMAT - Police are investigating an accident that occurred at a fund-raising car wash at the Mount Elizabeth School. A driver apparently rear-ended a police car that was waiting in line for the car wash. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL

Chief may have illegally shot bear

HAINES - The state of Alaska is investigating Police Chief Heath Scott for shooting a bear that had tipped over his garbage. Scott said he was within his rights but state law says “the necessity for the taking is not brought about by the improper disposal of garbage or a similar attractive nuisance.” THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

Car hits propane line

THORNHILL - A local resident was seriously injured last week when his vehicle hit a propane line causing a fire. Officials say the unnamed driver suffered severe burns and was medivaced to a hospital in Vancouver. THE TERRACE STANDARD

Former local bishop dies

SITKA - The former leader of the Russian Orthodox Church in American, Theodosius, died last week at 87. In the late 1960s, Theodosius was the Bishop of Sitka and oversaw the rebuilding of St. Michaels Cathedral after it was destroyed by a fire.  Later, he was the American Metropolitan for 25 years. Moose season closes

WRANGELL - The Wrangell and Petersburg moose season came to an end earlier this month. Officials say that 115 moose were taken this year. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL

Death of man in police custody probed

GITLAXT'AAMIKS - The province is investigating the death of a man whom police  took into into custody last week after a stabbing. RCMP used a taser on the man when they attempted to arrest him. He later died. THE TERRACE STANDARD

School enrollment dips

PETERSBURG - School officials say that enrollment is down significantly this year. The district had budgeted for 471 students but enrollment through October has been 429. THE PETERSBURG PILOT

Horse park to be residential area

WHITEHORSE - An area once set aside for a 138-acre horse riding area is now being considered by the city for development as a residential neighborhood. The Whistle Bend subdivision is an area along the Yukon River. THE WHITEHORSE DAILY STAR

State library closes

JUNEAU - The State Library and Museum have been temporarily closed because of COVID issues, the state announced last week. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE

Report is for the birds

KITIMAT - Police received a report a suspicious vehicle in the Strawberry Meadows area video-taping the area. The RCMP determined it was a local bird watcher Face Timing a new find with a family member. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL
