Man rescued after boat sinks
WRANGELL - The Coast Guard rescued a man floating in Union Bay last
week. The unnamed 70-year-old was floating on debris left over from the
sinking of the boat "Irony." He was wearing safety gear and was
reported to be in stable condition at the Ketchikan

Winds hampered fire efforts
PRINCE RUPERT - The Love Marine Electric Building was destroyed by a
fire earlier this week. Fire officials say fighting the fire, on
Saskatoon Avenue, was exacerbated by winds up to 50 mph. THE NORTHERN

Holiday bazaars are on
CRAIG - The Craig Recreation Department is going ahead with two holiday
bazaars this season. The bazaars will be held in the Craig Gym on
November 28 and December 12 and attendance will be limited but there
will also be way to take part electronically. THE

School travelers to be tested
PETERSBURG - The school board has decided that students and staff
traveling within the state need to be tested for COVID 19 if they are
outside the community for more than 72 hours. Recently there was a case
of COVID 19 at the local elementary school that

Tanker bill raises concerns
HAIDA GWAII - Local officials are concerned about a bill introduced in
the Canadian Parliament that would end restrictions of oil tankers in
the waters off northwestern British Columbia. The bill was introduced by
an Alberta lawmaker who wants to see an oil
terminal in the northwest, something that is generally opposed by

Derby results
THORNE BAY - Jeff Bergman and Cody Silverthorn were the winners of the
Thorne Bay Fishing Derby this year. Bergman's catch was a 13 pound, six
ounce coho. Cody Silverthorn landed the largest halibut at 144 pounds,

Valley gets record snow
HAINES - Snow is coming early and deep this year. More than two feet

Border crossing bear gets new home
STEWART - A black bear cub that gained national attention when it was
photographed trying to get into the Stewart/Hyder border station has a
new home. The bear, named Annie, will reside at the Smithers Northern
Lights Wildlife Society at least through next

Scamahorn on SISD board
THORNE BAY - Shane Scamahorn of Thorne Bay was recently elected to the Southeast
Island School District Board of Education. Scamahorn defeated incumbent

IFA back on the run
HOLLIS - The Inter-Island Ferry ships are back on the run. Both IFA
vessels had been in layup for several weeks and service was being

Shelter to get new safe house
HAINES - Becky's Place Haven of Hope has received a state grant to
purchase a four-bedroom "safe" house for those experiencing either
domestic violence or sexual assault. The $246,000 grant is from the
state's Coronavirus Non-Profit Relief Fund. THE CHILKAT

Knock, knock
KITIMAT - A Kitimaat Village family heard on a noise on its porch and
went to let the cat in. Turned out it was a starving two-year old black
bear that was getting into food on the porch. The bear eventually ended
up in the house's attic and had to be removed

Center low on COVID tests
PETERSBURG - The Petersburg Medical Center says that it is running low
on its rapid test kits. The center told the borough assembly last week
that it has not been able to replace the kits as fast as it is using

Pool closed over holidays
CRAIG - The Craig Pool will be closed from Thanksgiving to mid-January.
Officials say that more work needs to be done on the lap pool basin. The
