Borough mum on police chief firing
SKAGWAY - The Borough is not saying why longtime police chief Ray Leggat
was fired last month, but several residents spoke up in favor of the
former chief at the last Assembly meeting. One even demanded that
Borough Manager Brad Ryan be fired. THE SKAGWAY NEWS
Pool likely shut until summer
PETERSBURG - The Parks and Recreation pool will likely remain closed
until next summer. A fire in the boiler room shut down the pool last
month, now it looks like the permanent repairs could take up to nine
months, according to the school district officials.

Wildlife shelter caretaker dies
PRINCE RUPERT - The longtime caretaker of the Prince Rupert Wildlife
Rehab Shelter has died. Gunther Golina was in his 80s. He and his wife

WRANGELL - Ethel Lund has been honored by the Alaska Native
SisterhoodPolikc. Lund has been named Grand President Emeritus. THE

Widmark new tribal chairman
SITKA - Lawrence "Woody" Widmark has been elected the chairman of the
Sitka Tribal Council. Widmark defeated Benjamin Miyasato 118-75 to
replace Kathy Hope Erickson who did not seek re-election. KCAW- FM
No tsunami after earthquake
HAIDA GWAII - No tsunami was generated by a 4.2 magnitude earthquake
south of the Haida Gwaii last week. The earthquake was located 100 miles

School Board president honored
SKAGWAY - Skagway School Board President John Hischer has been honored
by the Alaska Superintendents Association. Hischer was awarded the 2020
MacKinnon Educational Excellence and Human Recognition Award last week.

TERRACE - The first snowstorm of the season hit town earlier this week.

Recycling costs to rise
PETERSBURG - The Borough Assembly is looking at four different options
for changes in the local recycling program. Unfortunately, staff says,
all four options will require increases in the local sanitation rates.

SKAGWAY - Police received a
report of a possible kidnapping and hostage situation in Skagway from a
concerned citizen in Arkansas. This report was later determined to be

Tugboat operator missing
KITIMAT - Authorities are
searching this week for a tugboat operator who went missing in Douglas
Channel. The RCMP says that a small tugboat was found adrift south of
Loretta Island. There was no one on board the boat
and the skipper, 42-year-old Kevin Goodwill, was missing. THE KITIMAT

Hainsers dust off vocal chords
HAINES - Residents will be
able to compete in a vocal contest next month. Todd Sebens says "Haines
Has Voice" will take part at the Chilkat Center for four weeks in

Dancer wins national award
PRINCE RUPERT -Margaret
Grenier has been awarded the $50,000 2020 Walter Carsen Prize for
Excellence in the Performing Arts by the Canada Council of the Arts.
Grenier is a dancer, choreographer and artistic director
of the Dancers of Damelahamid and the director of the Coastal Dance

report from a concerned citizen that there is a strange red light in the
sky, possibly a UFO. Police were unable to locate any object,
