Sitka shakes, rattles and rolls

SITKA - Residents were jolted out of their afternoon siestas earlier this week by a 4.3 magnitude earthquake centered 30 miles from town. There was no reported damage or injuries - THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL

Skagway shelters in place

SKAGWAY - The emergency COVID shelter in place directive remains through this weekend. Officials authorized the directive earlier this week because tracing determined that recent COVID cases had potentially widespread community spread. THE SKAGWAY NEWS

Fire makes foster family homeless

THORNHILL - A fire has destroyed an Old Remo house. Officials say the family had been fostering two children for the past seven years and now the lack of a house could require the province to break up the foster family. THE TERRACE STANDARD

Commission: Swap land

HAINES - The planning commission has unanimously recommended the borough negotiate a land swap with Roger Schnabel. Schnable owns three lots on Front Street that the commission said are necessary to provide a buffer between residential and industrial property. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEW

Should she stay or should she go?

WRANGELL - The School Board has put on hold the process to hire a new superintendent. Debbe Lancaster - who had originally announced in October her plan to leave after being admonished by the board for taking an unauthorized school supply trip to Juneau - now says she would be willing to stay on, at least for another year. Rink reopens, storage stops

STEWART - The Al Lawrence Ice Rink is open to the public. Officials say that all skaters must wear helmets and off ice loitering will not be allowed. Masks are required to enter and exit the arena. Officials also have asked residents who have been using the rink to store things for the past several weeks to please come and get their stuff. THE TERRACE STANDARD

Turkey time for Angoon ex-pats

JUNEAU - The Angoon Community Association and the City of Angoon were busy this week, in Juneau. Every year the groups are involved with providing turkeys and other Thanksgiving help to Angoon residents who are currently living in Juneau. COVID outbreak at LNG site

KITIMAT - More than 40 employees at the construction site for new Liquid Natural Gas plant have contracted COVID 19, officials say.  Construction began at the facility - which is scheduled to open in 2025 - in 2019. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL

Rupert has only had 5 COVID cases

PRINCE RUPERT - Much of the North Coast area has not been hit hard by COVID 19. For example, Prince Rupert has only had five confirmed cases since January. THE NORTHERN VIEW

Petersburg borough: Wear masks

PETERSBURG - The Borough Assembly has approved a mask mandate for the community. Residents must wear masks in public buildings, work settings and outdoor gatherings of more than 50 people. THE PETERSBURG PILOT

Second quake hits islands

QUEEN CHARLOTTE - A second moderate earthquake has hit the islands in the last 10 days. This quake - measured at 4.1 - was some 20 miles south of Queen Charlotte. A slightly larger quake - 4.2 - occurred 100 miles south of Queen Charlotte several days earlier. THE HAIDA GWAII OBSERVER

NCL planning new dock

JUNEAU - Norwegian Cruise Lines is seeking public feedback on how to develop its new property on the Egan Drive waterfront. NCL paid $20 million for the property last year and plans to build a dock on the property and other amenities. One of the plans calls for a pedestrian overpass for Egan Drive. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE

Wrangell borough: Wear masks

WRANGELL - The Borough Assembly has approved a mask ordinance that requires masks in all indoor public facilities. The ordinance also recommends limiting gatherings to fewer than 20 people, reduced restaurant capacity and strict quarantine and testing measures after travel outside of Wrangell. Man charged with murder

JUNEAU - A 30-year-old man has been charged with first degree murder after a stabbing at the Mountain View Apartments, a senior living facility on West 12th Street. A 69-year-old resident of the facility died last week. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE
