EPISTLE TO THE DELUGIANS - Poem

EPISTLE TO THE DELUGIANS

(Copyright 2020, by Dave Kiffer)

Gram thought that storms had souls
Which is of interest because I wasn't sure
She thought humans had them.

The daughter of an itinerant preacher
She hated religion in all forms
Because it ruined her childhood.

She hated being dragged town to town
Living in a cold, covered wagon
From the Ohio to the Delaware and back.

And yet, she would measure the weight,
And power, of one our local Southeasters
by saying it had a big, or a little, soul.

I think of that when one, like this, hits
And even though the Lord is willing,
The creek still rises, and rises, and rises.
