LOOKING AHEAD - Poem

LOOKING AHEAD

I tend toward optimism
Which is a word that just won't scan
Or at least I can't find the proper iamb
For it to work in a stanza like this.

And so, I rise each day in the hope
That I will encounter my bed again,
Twelve hours later, after a perfunctory
Romp through the meals of the day.

In the endless meantime
I know that the sun is shining
Behind the clouds, for someone,
Somehow, somewhere else.

And there is no valid point
In obsessing relentlessly
Over a half glass, when I can
Easily find a full one, if I look.

Finally, I have an overriding faith
That everyone else on the road
Is paying close enough attention
To keep their two-ton missiles in line.

Isn't that what life is all about?
The surety others stay in their own lane
In a world where bad things happen
Only to the people that you don't know.
