Police chief recovers from COVID
HAINES - Police chief Heath Scott reports that he has recovered from a
mild case of COVID 19. Scott says he contracted the virus while at a

Arts Center plans move ahead
JUNEAU - The city and borough assembly is pressing on with plans for the
Juneau Arts and Cultural Center. Voters turned down a proposal to build
a new $4.5 million center in 2019 and now the assembly says it is time
to think about what to do with the existing

Not so wet after all
PETERSBURG - It may have felt like a wet year in Little Norway, but
officials say that the yearly rainfall was right around the normal

Non-violent crime jumps
KITIMAT - Officials say that non-violent crime in the community was up
more than 20 percent in 2020. Violent crimes dropped 10 percent. Overall

Tourism bureau: Ships will return
SITKA - Visit Sitka is hopeful that cruise ships will return to the
community this summer. The tourism bureau believes that as the vaccines

Hospital staff stressed
TERRACE - Officials at the Mills Memorial Hospital say that a jump in
COVID hospitalizations in the last two weeks is stretching the facility

Mail-in elections may be permanent
JUNEAU
- Future elections in Juneau may be primarily "Vote by mail." Officials
say that a significantly higher turnout in elections this fall with
vote by mail because of the
COVID 19 shows that residents are growing more comfortable with not

WRANGELL - A pickup truck landed in Heritage Harbor last week. Officials
say that the 87-year-old driver apparently hit the gas pedal rather

Should have kept quiet
KITIMAT - Mounties responded to a complaint of a loud argument taking
place in a residence. When they arrived, they discovered that both
individuals had outstanding warrants. There was also a significant
amount of illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia in the
residence. Both individuals were arrested. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL
New name for school considered
SITKA - Schools officials are considering renaming Baranof Elementary
School. The district will consult the Sitka Tribe of Alaska on the
issue. At a recent school board meeting several speakers suggested
renaming the school after a prominent local Native leader.

Storms batter islands
HAIDA GWAII - Several storms with high winds have battered the islands
since the first of the year. Residents report significant damage to
homes, docks, and boats. THE HAIDA GWAII OBSERVER
Wounded eagle dies
JUNEAU - A bald eagle that was found before Christmas near Montana Creek
Road with shotgun pellets in its body has been euthanized. Officials
say the damage to the internal organs was too severe. It was also
suffering from lead poisoning. Lead shotgun pellets

Magistrate retires
WRANGELL - Deputy Magistrate Leanna Nash is retiring at the end of the
month. Nash has been with the court system in Wrangell for more than two
