Snowboarder diesTERRACE - A snowboarder who went missing near Shames Mountain and was found a day later, has died. Officials say that Tim Gianou was taken to Mills Memorial Hospital, but died the next day. THE TERRACE STANDARDBig Brothers can match againHAINES - The local chapter of Big Brothers/Big Sisters can make matches again. A funding shortfall had stopped new matches in 2018, but money from the Governor's Emergency Education Relief Fund will allow matches to resume. THE CHILKAT VALLY NEWSDonald Trump Jr. visits PetersburgPETERSBURG - The President's son, Donald Trump Jr. was in Petersburg a couple of weeks ago. Videos posted on his Facebook page showed him on a vessel in Petersburg harbor and then on a lake, most likely on Mitkof Island. Trump was reportedly in Southeast Alaska as part of a guided hunt that had been auctioned off as a fundraiser. THE PETERSBURG PILOTEagle shooting probedJUNEAU - Officials are investigating the shooting of a bald eagle sometime last week between Mendenhall Loop and Montana Creek Road. The longtime volunteer with Whitehorse Fire Department has retired after 47 years. THE WHITEHORSE DAILY STARResidents: Dog attack penalty lightKITIMAT - Residents of the Baker Street area are upset that an attack by an area dog that killed a smaller dog and injured its owner did not lead to stiffer penalties. The family of the larger dog was ordered to get obedience training for it and to secure their property to prevent another breakout. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINELFormer council member diesWRANGELL - Residents are remembering longtime local teacher and former city councilmember Robert Grant. Grant died recently at age 83. THE WRANGELL SENTINELTown seeks state help with dockHAINES - The borough will talk to the state economic development agency about helping redevelop Lutak Dock. The dock was determined to be at the end of its use in 2014. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWSMask mandate extendedJUNEAU - The community mask mandate will continue into the new year, possibly until summer. The mandate - until June unless the Assembly decides otherwise - requires that masks be worn in indoor public settings and while using borough facilities. THE JUNEAU EMPIREChristmas Bird Count continuesPETERSBURG - Birders counted 55 species of birds on Mitkof Island as part of the annual Christmas Bird Count. Among the spotted rarities this year were the yellow-billed loon, the Western grebe and the black legged kittiwake. THE PETERSBURG PILOTBoil water notice extendedTHORNHILL - Residents are being asked to continue boil tap water before using it. Tests earlier this month found higher than normal levels of coliform in the water supply. THE TERRACE STANDARDConstruction outbreak "over"KITIMAT - Officials say that the COVID 19 outbreaks at the LNG Canada construction site appear to be over. Two separate outbreaks affected more than 70 employees in different work groups. The last recorded case was on Dec. 2. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINELCarney named coach of the yearWRANGELL - Teacher Jack Carney was honored in mid-December. The National Wrestling Coaches Association named him assistant wrestling coach of the year for Alaska. THE WRANGELL SENTINELElectric transit bus arrivesJUNEAU - Capital Transit has its first all-electric bus. Officials say it is the first electric transit company bus in the state.
