SIRI saves
HAINES - Funny Farm manager Mark Kelly has SIRI to thank for being
alive. Kelly was working on a woodpile at the lodge on Mosquito Lake
Road when it the pile collapsed on him earlier this month, burying him
under several feet of ice, snow, and wood. He was
unable to move, but he used SIRI to voice dial his phone in his pocket

Decorations will stay up
PETERSBURG - Officials say the colorful community Christmas decorations
will remain lit, possibly through the end of February. Officials said
the lights are a "bright spot- for the community. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
Wolves hoopsters active
SITKA - The coaches of the SItka high boys and girls basketball teams
are hopeful for a successful season. Both teams took the court last week
for the first time in nearly a year. They will have a reduced season
this year, playing teams from Ketchikan, Juneau

Students back in class
JUNEAU - Students returned to in person classes last week for the first
time in the 2020-21 school year. Around 1,200 students were in class
with that number expected to reach 1,900. The parents of 1,600 students
have told the district that they will continue
distance learning, 400 are in the district correspondence program and

Cruise line cancels
WRANGELL - Windstar Cruises has informed the city that it will not be
visiting in 2021. The line made 10 stops in 2019 with a 200-passenger
ship and was planning to bring a 300-passenger ship in 2021. THE

New manager process begins
HAINES - Nearly eight months after the firing of the previous borough
manager, the borough assembly has decided to advertise for a new one.
Borough Clerk Alekka Fullerton has been the acting manager since Debra

Port has record year
PRINCE RUPERT - Despite international uncertainty because of the
pandemic, it was a good year for the Port of Prince Rupert. Officials
say that the trade volume through the port was more than $50 billion in

Treadwell trail fundy raises $230K
JUNEAU - Trail Mix, Inc. says it has raised more than $230,000 for the
Treadwell Ditch Trail project. Work on the trail should be completed by

Tours will need COVID plans
HAINES - Tour companies wanting to operate this year will have to
provide the Borough with a COVID-19 mitigation. The borough assembly
voted last week to require plans to be filed in advance of operations.

Risk level dropped
PETERSBURG - Local emergency officials have lower the COVID risk level
to "yellow," the lowest level. Although there remain several open cases
of COVID 19, they are connected to a pair of household clusters and are

Airport passenger load drops
TERRACE - 2020 was a tough year at the Northwest Regional Airport with
travelers down significantly. Nearly 25,000 people passed through the

Clerk: Mayor recall premature
WRANGELL - The city clerk says that a recall petition for Mayor Steve
Prysunka was filed too early. The state does not allow recall actions
within 120 days of the election of an official. The group seeking the
recall opposes the city's face mask mandate. THE

Housing tax break considered
JUNEAU - The city and borough assembly will consider a tax break
proposal to encourage residential development in the downtown area. The
12-year-property break would lower taxes on construction with four or
more units from 10.66 mills to 2.65 mills. THE JUNEAU
