Real Mounties: Beware of the fake ones
KITIMAT - The RCMP is warning
residents not to fall for phone fraud being perpetrated by the "RCMP."
Residents have recently received calls from someone claiming to be the
"RCMP" and demanding payment for alleged "fraud"

A 'debt' repaid
HAINES - Nearly 60 years ago,
former Anchorage teacher Wally Smith experienced the "kindness" of
Haines residents when he was injured while in the city waiting to take a
ferry south. Local residents volunteered to take
care of with him during his recovery. Last week, he made a significant
donation to the Haines Community Foundation to help the town with its

Medical Center almost done
WRANGELL - Construction on the new
Wrangell Medical Center has reached the 95 percent mark. Staff hopes to

Coast Guard rescues family
SITKA - A Coast Guard rescue
helicopter brought back four family members to SItka after their boat
capsized last week. The mother and three children were brought back from
Yasmani Inlet, 27 miles south of Sitka. THE DAILY

First baby of 2021
HAZELTON - The first 2021 baby in
the Northwest was born 2:18 pm on January 1 at Wrinch Memorial Hospital.
The parents of the unamed boy are Royelle Williams and Shane Skulsh of

COVID in 10 schools
TERRACE - Cases of COVID 19 have
now cropped up in 10 local schools, officials say. Before the beginning
of December there had been no COVID cases in any of the local schools.

SA rings in big dollars
PETERSBURG - Salvation Army bell
ringers brought in nearly $20,000 during the Christmas season. Officials
pegged the total take at $19,879. They said it was nearly the same
amount as raised in Ketchikan, a much larger community.

Smithers to have cooking school
SMITHERS - The Smithers Secondary
School has received a $700,000 grant for new programs. Officials say
they plan to update the student cooking program and create a culinary

Mount Edgecumbe student to Stanford
SITKA - It was a very happy New
Year for Mount Edgecumbe student Cheyenne Murphy. The 18-year Bethel
resident was awarded a full scholarship to Stanford University. THE

ALCAN 200 cancelled
HAINES - The ALCAN 200, the
longest snowmobile road race in the world, has been cancelled for 2021.
The race is usually run on the Haines Highway from the Canadian border
to Dezadeash Lodge and back, but it cannot take
place because the Canadian border remains closed because of the COVID 19

Co-op to build smokehouses
WRANGELL - The Wrangell
Cooperative Association is building smokehouses for community members to
use to boost food self-sufficiency and traditional lifestyle steps.
Funding for the project is coming from CARES Act funding

Yukon hatchet job
WHITEHORSE - The RCMP has arrested
a couple and charged them with entering a house and taking if over. The
couple was armed with a hatchet, according to the Mounties. THE

Fine Arts students hopeful for 2021
SITKA - 2021 may have arrived with
some uncertainties, but students hoping to take part at the Sitka Fine
Arts Camp engaged in a traditional activity on New Year's Eve. They
stayed up until midnight so they could be among
the first to sign up for classes set for the summer of 2021. THE DAILY

Local pilot starts own service
PETERSBURG - Scott Newman is
persistent. The longtime pilot for Pacific Wings purchased a Dehavilland
Beaver this year and founded Petersburg Flying Service, so he could
provide service to his hometown even at a time when
