JUNEAU - A "flock" of 12 plastic pink flamingos has been popping up around town recently. The local chapter of the Rainbow Girls has using it to "brighten" up the community, calling it "You've Been Flocked." THE JUNEAU EMPIRE

Visitor gifts residents

SKAGWAY - A anonymous resident of California who has made several trips to Skagway has tasked local resident Deb Potter with playing Santa Claus. The donor has purchased several hundred dollars worth of gift cards from local eateries and has asked Potter to distribute them throughout the community. THE SKAGWAY NEWS

Nursing home outbreak

PRINCE RUPERT - Northern Health is fighting a COVID 19 outbreak at the Acropolis Manor nursing home. Officials say that four residents and three staff members have thus far tested positive. THE NORTHERN VIEW

Utility lottery announced

WRANGELL - The borough has approved a "lottery" in which one resident a month will receive a rebate on their monthly utility bill. The lottery is part of the borough's "2021: Wrangell's Year of Hope" program. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL

OD calls double

TERRACE - Emergency calls relating to drug overdoses increased dramatically in the community in 2020. Officials say that more 208 calls were received last year, 98 were received in 2019.  At the same time, officials are also noting the presence of benzodiazepines in the area street drugs.  "Benzos" do not respond to naloxone treatment. Landslide unlikely to reoccur

PETERSURG - Although a portion of Tonka Mountain collapsed in a landslide in early November, Forest Service officials say it poses little danger for additional landslides. THE PETERSBURG PILOT

Hot time in the old town proposed

SMITHERS - The town council is considering a zoning request that would allow a crematorium to operate in the community. Currently local cremations must take place in either Terrace or Vanderhoof. THE SMITHERS INTERIOR NEWS

Pothole season commences

SITKA - It's pothole filling season in the community. Officials say it will be busier than normal in 2021 because COVID 19 related budget cuts have delayed several planned road resurfacing projects. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL

Vaccines delayed

KITIMAT - The COVID 19 vaccine that was supposed to arrive in Kitimaat Village last week has been delayed. Officials say that a nationwide vaccine shortage is holding up the local delivery. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL

Dyea road "unsafe" to drive

SKAGWAY - State officials say that landslides in the last couple of months have made the Dyea Road unsafe to drive. Currently, only people who own or rent property along the road have been allowed to use it. THE SKAGWAY NEWS

Fire engine burns up

TELKWA - Fire officials assessing the damage to a fire rescue vehicle after its diesel engine burned up earlier this month. Officials say the 2015 engine is no longer under warranty but that is has less that 7,500 miles and the builder may still honor the warranty. THE SMITHERS INTERIOR NEWS

Assembly member resigns

WRANGELL - Borough assembly member Julie Decker has resigned after seven years on the body. Two of Decker's children died in a car accident earlier this year and she said that needed to spend more time with her family. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL

State to test water quality

PETERSBURG - The state will come to town this summer to test the water quality in Petersburg Harbor. Officials say that local concerns have been raised about whether or not summer traffic, like cruise ships, is affecting the water quality. THE PETERSBURG PILOT

Mounties seek man

KITIMAT - The RCMP says a 25-year-old man sought on numerous province-wide charges in believed to be in the Kitimat area. The man faces charges ranging from assault to assault on a police officer and resisting arrest. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL.
