HAINES - A Haines woman was apparently nipped on her backside by a black bear that was inside an outhouse when she went to use it last week. The woman was not seriously injured. Afterwards, another member of her party shined a flashlight into the toilet and saw the bear's face. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS
 
Dream Cruises plans to sail

SITKA - Allen Marines subsidiary Alaska Dream Cruises is moving ahead with plans to offers small ship cruises this summer. Alaska Dream ships are American built and do not have to meet the foreign visit requirements of federal law.  They are putting in COVID safety protocols for the season. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL

Expected grant could vanish

HAINES - Local officials are scrambling to find out if they can still get a COVID-related grant of $1.4 million that was announced in December but now may not come at all. The COVID grant was supposed to come to the community from Bartlett Hospital in Juneau, but now Bartlett says state law does not allow it to spend the money outside of Juneau and it will return the grant to the state. Owl sightings leave Craig wiser

CRAIG - It has been a "hoot and a half" on POW recently as residents have been treated to several owl encounters. First a great grey owl was seen and photographed near Craig in January. Then a great horned owl was heard hooting nearby a week later. THE PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND POST

Two die in tug sinking

KITIMAT - Two crewmembers are dead after a tugboat capsized in Gardner Canal, 35 miles south of Kitimat last week. Officials say a third crewmember survived the sinking which occurred near Kemano. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL

Mask mandate remains

PETERSBURG - The local mask mandate will state in place for the time being. A motion was made to terminate the mandate at a recent Borough Assembly meeting but no one seconded the motion. The mandate has been in place since November. THE PETERSBURG PILOT

COVID outbreak at mine

STEWART - A COVID 19 outbreak has been declared at the Brucejack Mine north of Stewart. Officials say that 22 people have tested positive since the beginning of February. THE TERRACE STANDARD

Nursing home toll rises to 12

PRINCE RUPERT - The death toll at the COVID outbreak at the Acropolis Manor nursing home is now 12. Officials say that 51 residents and staff members have tested positive so far. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW

WW II relic 'in the way'

SITKA - A World War II military observation post is apparently in the way of progress. Local officials say the 80-year-old Japonski Island structure needs to be moved so a seaplane base can be built. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL

Hospital gets second racism claim

KITIMAT - Kitimat General Hospital has been accused of a second racially related incident. First, a woman in labor was allegedly told to go a hospital in Terrace where her baby was stillborn two weeks ago. Now a family says that a 39-year-old man was allegedly told to go elsewhere after experiencing chest pains and died of a heart attack after walking away from the hospital late last summer. Gardener has bumper winter crop

JUNEAU - Judy Hauck has usually been a snowbird since her retirement, but this year COVID has kept her in her North Douglas home. The avid gardener is growing microgreens and summer vegetables in her home. Her neighbors are thrilled by the offseason bounty. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE

Pellet mill cuts back on noise

SMITHERS - Pinnacle Pellet is getting good marks from neighbors for its efforts to reduce plant noise. Company officials say that reduction of back up beepers and removal of grizzly screens is making a difference, as is the fact the company has not had any chipping activity since December. A sound barrier is being installed on the chipper to reduce noise when chipping resumes. THE SMITHERS INTERIOR NEWS

NorQuest founder dies

PETERSBURG - Residents are remembering Roy Smith, longtime area fisherman and founder of Lafayette Fisheries, the forerunner of NorQuest Seafoods. Smith died of a heart attack at 71 in January. THE PETERSBURG PILOT

Pool reopens

CRAIG - The Aquatic Center is back open following a lengthy COVID related closure. Use limits will be in place for the foreseeable future. THE PRINCE OF WALES POST

Vandalism closes road

HAINES - The state parks has announced the Chilkoot Lake Road will be closed in the wintertime moving forward. Officials say that significant vandalism along the road is becoming too expensive to deal with every year. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS
