9 die at seniors' facility
PRINCE
RUPERT - Officials say that three residents at the Acropolis Manor
long-term care facility have died of COVID 19 in the past week. The
total number of residents and staff at the facility to test positive for

Assembly member warned over mask
PETERSBURG
- Borough Assembly member Jeff Meucci is the only person in town to
receive an official warning for violating the community mask ordinance
in the past two months. Meucci received the warning after he was
reportedly seen at the rec center without a mask. Meucci was one of four
assembly members to vote in favor of the mask ordinance in November.
Meucci noted that police chief JIm Kerr, who gave him the warning, also
violated the rule when he was recently photographed at the airport

Nearly half of town vaccinated

- Roughly 40 percent of the town population has taken the COVID 19
vaccination, according to local officials. More than 900 people have had

Money raised for cancer fight

RUPERT - Nearly $10,000 has been raised in two months to help Nick
Vandenburg with his expenses as he fights cancer. Vandenburg also got

Family: Hospital turned pregnant woman away
KITIMAT
- A local family says that their pregnant daughter was turned away from
the Kitimat Memorial Hospital last week and her baby was later
still-borne at Mills Memorial Hospital in Terrace. The family said the
woman was two weeks past due when she went to the hospital with
contractions last week but was told to go to Terrace instead. THE

Schools converting to wood heat
CRAIG
- Several school districts on Prince of Wales are converting their
facilities to wood heat. Hydaburg was the latest and Craig is planning
to. Coffman Cove. Whale Pass, Hollis, Naukati. Thorne Bay and Kasaan had

Guthrie new town administrator
KLAWOCK
- Anna Guthrie is the new city administrator for Klawock. Guthrie
replaces long time administrator Leslie Isaacs who stepped down in

Board approves sex ed classes
PETERSBURG
- The school board has approved the sex ed curriculum for 2021. State
law requires the board to sign off the curriculum which will be taught
to ninth graders by science teacher Alice Cumps. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
Swinton new hoops coach
HAINES
- Former state champion basketball player Tyler Swinton will coach the
boys team this year. Swinton, who was on the championship team in 2010,
replaces long time coach Steve Fossman. Swinton says that he is only
taking the job for one year and that Fossman expects to be back in 2022.

Fender bender injures five
KITIMAT
- Five people were taken the hospital with minor injuries after
three-car accident after one of the cars when through a red light at the
corner of Haisla and Kuldo boulevards last week. Police are

WRANGELL
- The venerable former state ferry Chilkat sank recently in gusty
weather at a dock in Anacortes. The Chilkat was the first ship built
for the Alaska Marine Highway System, back in 1957. It has been used as a
fish processor since 1988. It was raised several days after the

- Gordon Wilson is $150,000 richer. Wilson purchased a very lucky

Mayor faults state funding drop
PETERSBURG
- Mayor Mark Jensen has expressed his concerns over a drop in state
funding with Governor Mike Dunlevey. Jensen noted that drops in state
funding will make it harder for the community to operate the jail and
that a state proposal to require communities to pay to the cost to
prosecute people who violate state misdemeanor laws will cost
