Bacteria noted in Wrangell Narrows
PETERSBURG
- State monitors have determined there are higher than normal levels of
fecal coliform at several sites in Wrangell Narrows near town. The
highest levels were at the North Boat Harbor and the South Boat Harbor.

Railway cuts jobs
SKAGWAY
- The White Pass and Yukon railway announced that two dozen jobs have
been "abolished" for 2021 because operations will be seriously curtailed
by a lack of cruise ships this summer. Among the jobs cut are coach
cleaners, trackmen, diesel mechanics and heavy equipment operators. THE

RUPERT - Five generations of Bobby Brown's family gathered together
online, COVID style, last week. Brown, a lifelong area fisherman who was
born in Masset, turned 95 recently. He has 12 children, 52
grandchildren, 77 great grandchildren and 21 great-great children. THE

Town centennial planned
CRAIG
- A committee has formed to plan for next year's 100th anniversary of
the town of Craig. Craig was incorporated on March 1, 1922. THE PRINCE

Wrangell: Put on masks
WRANGELL
- The borough has re-instituted the local mask mandate. The Assembly
also is requiring testing for people arriving at the airport. Officials
say the emergency ordinances were spurred by the recent COVID outbreak

COVID delays plastic bag elimination
HAINES
- In 2019, the borough implemented a ban on single use plastic bags by
stores. But in 2021 the ban is being ignored locally just as similar
bans are being ignored across the country. The reason? COVID. Most store
owners prefer not coming in contact with bags brought to the stores

New restaurant opens
CRAIG
- Angie Demmert and Chanel McKinley are zigging when everyone else is
zagging. The two have opened up T.k's, a new restaurant in Craig that is
in a food truck attached to a Quonset hut that is attached to the Craig

Vaccinated won't have to test
HAINES
- Travelers who have been fully vaccinated will be no longer be
encouraged to test when they arrive in Haines. Non vaccinated people
will continue to be encouraged to test on arrival or quarantine for 14

Airport testing to continue
PETERSBURG
- COVID 19 testing will continue at the airport through June 30. The
borough assembly recently voted to continue the previously mandated
state testing for Alaskans and non-residents who arrive at the airport.

POWCAC sets priorities
CRAIG
- The Prince of Wales Community Advisory Council has picked its
priorities to present to the state. The most important is continued
state support of the Inter-Island Ferry. Also on the list are
improvements to the Kasaan Road, the Hydaburg Road, the Whale Pass Road,
the Twin Island Road, the Port Saint Nicholas Road, Sandy Beach Road

Half of adults are vaccinated
SKAGWAY
- More than half of the year-round adult population of 800 has been
vaccinated. Officials expect that number to top 75 percent by mid-month.

Organists sought
PRINCE
RUPERT - Can you play the pipe organ? St. Andrew's Anglican Cathedral
would love to hear from you. The Cathedral's longtime organist passed
away last year and church officials are calling on anyone who wants to
stop by because the 95-year-old organ needs to be played to keep it

WRANGELL
- Dogs were roaming free in "Wrangell" more than 10,000 years ago. It
was recently announced that a leg bone fragment recovered from a cave
near Blake Channel 25 years ago is from a dog that lived 10,125 years

Winter games take place
HAINES - The Southeast
Alaska State Fair's Winter Games took place recently. Vanessa Wishtar
won the tea making contest, Sylvia Heinz won the survival suit relay,
Spencer Baumgartner won the frying pan toss, Wendell Harren and Keri
Williamson won the avalanche beacon race and Liam Cassidy, Jim Lampkins,
