Risk level drops

PETERSBURG - The community COVID risk level has been lowered from red to orange. Officials say that the number of active cases dropped from nearly 70 to around 11 by the middle of the month. THE PETERSBURG PILOT

Covid checkpoint closed

KITIMAT - A checkpoint to limit access into Kitimaat Village has been discontinued by the Haisla Nation Council. Non-members who don't have business in the village are still discouraged from entering, but the checkpoint will no longer prevent entry. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL

Residents stirred by shaker

HAINES - Residents had a little rumble last week when a magnitude 2.5 earthquake struck 10 miles south of the city. There was no significant damage but many residents felt the quake. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

Pandemic program faulted

SKAGWAY - A dozen local residents say they are being asked by the state Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program to return money they had been given earlier. The residents - who all work seasonally in the tour industry - say the program contends that they should receive lesser amounts because they only work seasonally. Rooney passes away

WRANGELL - Residents are remembering longtime local "Gordy" Rooney who died last week at 72. Rooney came to Wrangell as a small child and was known as an avid fisherman/outdoorsman and was also the owner of Rooney's Roost Bed and Breakfast. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL

Appeal raises $90,000

KITIMAT -The 2020 Kitimat Christmas Hamper Appeal for 2020 raised the most money in its longest history:  $90,583.24. The appeal is sponsored by the Kitimat Foodbank. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL

Wetz permanent park head

SKAGWAY - The acting head of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park has been named the permanent superintendent. Angela Wetz has been the acting head since last August. THE SKAGWAY NEWS

Four finalists

HAINES - The borough assembly has winnowed down the list of candidates for borough manager to four. They are acting manager Alekka Fullerton, Jeremy Marshal of New York, Robert Rouse of Fairbanks and George Zoukee of Tennessee. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

SKAGWAY - The police department has instituted an anonymous online tip line to encourage residents to help combat drug abuse and other crimes in the community. THE SKAGWAY NEWS

Bear harvest lowered

HAINES - State game officials are lowering the brown bear harvest limit for 2021. They say that the number of brown bears in Upper Lynn Canal dropped 20 percent in 2020. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

The water's fine

WRANGELL - The water around town is generally free of fecal coliform. State officials conducted tests on six sights near the community last summer and none had higher that accceptable bacteria levels. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL

JUNEAU - A group of residents on their way to a nearby oyster farm had a very close encounter with a pair of killer whales last week. When the boaters saw the pod a few hundred feet away they went dead in the water, but two of the whales turned and came up right next to the boat, nearly hitting it with their tails as they swam beside it.
