HAINES - Andrew Letchworth's family knows something about Persian rugs and he recently noticed an old one in a friend's garage. So, when the friend discarded the rug in the landfill after a recent flood, Letchworth went landfill "diving" in search of it. He found the rug, and after a good cleaning, it has an estimated value of at least $8,000. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

Another water sale pondered

SITKA - The community is pondering yet another proposal to sell Blue Lake water rights to a company hoping to sell Sitka water elsewhere. Arctic Blue Waters Alaska Inc is the most recent company to propose shipping out water. Arctic Blue owner Fred Paley has been trying to do so for at least 20 years. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL

Herring harvest set

PRINCE RUPERT - Fishery officials have set a harvest level of 5 percent or 1,000 tons for the 2021 northern coast herring fishery. Normal harvest levels range from 10 to 20 percent. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW

Raptor captors sheet swan

JUNEAU - It took several efforts over several months, but an injured Auke Bay swan has been captured and is now at the Sitka Raptor Center for rehabilitation. Residents and workers from the Juneau Raptor Center managed to entice the swan, which has damaged flight feathers, with food and then grab in in a sheet. It was the sixth capture attempt. Beer virus beats Beerfest

Canadian carver honored nationally

TERRACE - Dempsey Bob has been awarded the Canadian Governor General's Arts Award. Bob, a Tahtlan-Tlingit carver, teaches at Coast Mountain College. In the past, he has been awarded Officer of the Order of Canada, the country's highest civilian honor. THE TERRACE STANDARD

Union:  More regs needed

MEHS honors 'Mr. Mount Edgesumbe'

SITKA - A ceremony was held at Mt. Edgecumbe High School last week honoring Gil Truitt who died last summer at 93. Truitt was a former student, coach and longtime teacher and administrator at the school. COVID numbers spike

Ordinance would tackle 'Zoom bombing'

JUNEAU - The borough is considering an ordinance that would outlaw "Zoom bombing." Zoom bombing is defined as joining a meeting anonymously and showing inappropriate images or making comments that are lewd, threatening, obscene, or disruptive and out of context. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE
