New outbreak at Acropolis Manor

PRINCE RUPERT - A new outbreak of COVID 19 has occurred at the Acropolis Manor senior home. Two residents are reported to have tested positive. Between mid-January and mid-March, 57 residents and staff tested positive for the virus. And 16 residents died.   THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW

Couple separated by COVID

WRANGELL - A couple that has been married for nearly 70 years has spent most of the last year apart because of COVID restrictions. Elmer Mork, 91,  was finally able to visit his wife Patricia, 87, a couple of weeks ago at the Wrangell Medical Center's long term care facility. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL.

Woman, father charged in cycle death

SITKA - A 19-year-old woman has been charged with manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident that killed a bicyclist two weeks ago. The young woman's 70-year-old father has been charged with tampering with evidence and hindering prosecution. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL

Fielding top DDF coach in state

Boat destroyed in shipyard fire

PETERSBURG - A fire at the Petersburg Marine Shipyard has destroyed a fishing boat. The 31-foot fiberglas gillnetter/troller "Nitty Gritty" was owned by Denny Heimdahl of Petersburg. KFSK - FM

Fire department honored for rescue attempt

YAKUTAT - The Coast Guard and the State Legislature have recognized the Yakutat Fire Department for its attempts to save a fisherman who had fallen into the water during a storm last August. Several members of the department went out during the gale force winds to find the crewman, who was eventually found dead. KCAW - FM

Closure surprised restaurants

TERRACE - Local restaurants were shocked by the provincial order to shut down indoor dining for three weeks. Owners said they thought that things were getting better, COVID-wise. THE TERRACE STANDARD 

TEMSCO still welcome

SKAGWAY - Local officials have sent a memorandum to TEMSCO indicating they still want the helicopter company to continue to operate from the port area in the future. The port lease that Skagway has with White Pass, which is owned by Survey Point Holdings which controls Southeast Stevedoring which owns TEMSCO, expires in 2023. THE SKAGWAY NEWS

Science Cowboy to ride off into sunset

HAINES - Longtime Haines school science teacher and public "Science Cowboy" Mark Fontenant is hanging up his spurs. Fontenant said he is leaving teaching after 26 years, before he becomes one of the "dinosaurs." THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

Students back to full time school

WHITEHORSE - Students at the city's three senior secondary schools will be back in full day, in person sessions on April 19. The students had been on half day, in person sessions since September. THE WHITEHORSE DAILY STAR

2021 POW marathon cancelled

Man charged with bilking senior

SKAGWAY - Troopers have arrested a Skagway man on charges he bilked an elderly person out of several thousand dollars for some deck and yard work in 2019. Troopers say the elderly woman hired a local contractor who subcontracted the job out. The cost of the work was $13,997 but the man told the woman to give him a check for $15,000. Then he asked for a second check for $5,000 which she also paid. Police realized something was up when the original company sent a woman a bill for the $13,997. KHNS-FM

FEMA offers landslide mapping money

HAINES - Federal disaster agency FEMA has offered the borough $100,000 for landslide mapping. A large landslide in December destroyed several homes and killed two people. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS
