Company gets timber contract

HAINES - An Oregon company has received won a contract to cut the 1,000-acre Baby Brown timber tract north of Haines. NWFP Inc, bid more than $423,000 for the state timber lands contract under which work could as soon as June. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

Airport to reopen

PRINCE RUPERT - The Prince Rupert Regional Airport on Digby Island will reopen by June 1. Officials say that Air Canada has reached an agreement with the Canadian government to resume service to the airports in Prince Rupert and Sandspit. THE PRINCE RUPERT DAILY NEWS

Mounties honored

TERRACE - Three members of the Terrace RCMP detachment have been honored for their bravery in two recent incidents. Constables Dean Perrin and Matt Sullivan were given citations for how they handled a confrontation with an armed suspect in April of last year and Corporal Joshua Smith was honored for rescuing an injured person during a propane explosion in October. Dyea cabin controversial

SKAGWAY - A newly built cabin in the Dyea campground is causing concern from some in the community that it competes with a nearby commercial operations. The municipality had planned to rent the bare bones cabin for $50 a night to help pay off the construction costs, but that number does undercut the commercial Chilkoot Trail Outpost which rents full-service cabins starting at $165 a night. Old Skeena site is new LPG facility

Officer not faulted for taser use

GITLAXT'AAMIKS - A provincial investigator has determined an RCMP officer who used a taser to try to stop a man from cutting his own throat is not at fault for the man's death. The incident happened last October after the man had had already severely injured family members before the police arrived. THE TERRACE STANDARD

Northern Lynn Canal king fishery cancelled

HAINES - Sport fishing for king salmon north of Seduction Point will not take place for the fifth year in a row. Fish and Game is expecting the 2021  return to be well below the needed escapement level of 1,750 salmon. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

Royal visit remembered
