Mayor vetoes mask ordinance
SKAGWAY - Mayor Andrew Cremata and the borough assembly are at odds over
a mask mandate. The assembly passed a mandate two weeks ago, but
Cremata vetoed it. The assembly will take up a potential override at its

Shooting near school probed
SMITHERS - Police have arrested a suspect in an attempted shooting last
week. The incident reportedly took place at 10:45 pm in the

'Gatherings' caused outbreak
PETERSBURG - Local officials say that a recent COVID 19 outbreak in
February and March that affected nearly 100 people spread rapidly
because of "gatherings." More than 30 percent of the cases were traced
to schools and day cares and another 30 percent were

Bus service to continue
PRINCE RUPERT - BC Northern Bus Service will continue at least for
another year. Officials say the service, which includes twice weekly
roundtrips between Prince Rupert and Prince George, has been renewed

COVID level rises
SITKA - The community has raised its COVID 19 alert level from low to
moderate. Officials say that the average number of new cases is five per

Mask mandate dropped
WRANGELL - The borough assembly has dropped the local mask mandate which
went into effect in early March. But rules requiring quarantines and

Avalanche closes highway
WHITEHORSE - A large avalanche closed the South Klondike Highway last
week for several days. Officials say snow as deep as eight feet covered a
large section of the road but there was no property damage and no

New manager hired
HAINES - The borough assembly has hired its fifth borough manager in the
past decade. George Zoukee of New York has a background in public
sector finance management but no experience as a city manager. THE

LNG project offers vaccines
KITIMAT - LNG Canada has begun offering voluntary COVID vaccinations to
all employees at its Kitimat construction site. The site was the
location of COVID outbreak before Christmas that affected more than 60

Little Norway Festival will be held
PETERSBURG - The Chamber of Commerce says the Little Norway Festival
will go on this year. Last year's 62nd annual festival was cancelled,
but this year's one will take place from May 13 to May 16. THE

They want a "Loo" too!
TERRACE - City officials are looking at copying an idea from Vancouver.
They are seeking $250,000 in grant money to install an "All season
public washroom" called the "Portland Loo" in the downtown area. THE

COVID outbreak at hospital
PRINCE RUPERT - A COVID 19 outbreak has been declared at the Prince
Rupert Regional Hospital. Officials say there are four confirmed cases

Rally held to protest 'lockdowns'
SMITHERS - Approximately 60 people attended a downtown rally last week

Recall effort shelved
WRANGELL - A local group trying to recall Mayor Steve Prysunka said it
is dropping the recall. Instead, the group says it will focus on the
