COVID travel restrictions in place

PRINCE RUPERT - The Province is cracking down on people who are traveling outside their regions. Officials say that out of region hotel and ferry bookings are to be refused and that highway checkpoints may be set up near the regional borders. Landslide neighborhood back open

HAINES - The Beach Road neighborhood is being opened to the public for the first time since a deadly landslide destroyed several houses in the area on December 2. The borough assembly also received a preliminary report that indicated a low to moderate likelihood of additional landslides in the area. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

Snow melt washes out highway

TELEGRAPH CREEK - Heavy snow melt has caused a washout of Highway 51 last week. Officials say they aren't sure when the only road into the community will be reopened. THE TERRACE STANDARD

Store frustrated by vandals

TERRACE - The owners of Trigo's Lifestyle Store on Kalum Street are frustrated after a series of broken windows and attempted break-ins in the past month.  The RCMP says that a rapid rise in incidents in the area have made it difficult to police and investigate property crimes. School theatre gets grant

KITIMAT - The Mount Elizabeth Theatre has received a $42,000 grant to install live streaming equipment. The local government grant matches a national one for the $110,000 project. The facility, at the secondary school, is used for theatrical productions, concerts, recitals, conventions, large community meetings and award ceremonies. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL

Still no ID on body found last year

SITKA - Officials say they still have not be able to identify the human remains that were found on Kruzof Island a year ago. DNA analysis has yet to be finished. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL

Housing prices jump $128,000

PRINCE RUPERT - The average house price in Prince Rupert is skyrocketing, according to the BC Real Estate commission. In 2020, the price was $302,000. In 2021, that number has exceeded $430,000. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW

In person graduation planned

WRANGELL - School officials say they hope to hold an in-person graduation ceremony for this year's graduating seniors. Last year, the ceremony was virtual, but there are tentative plans for an outdoor ceremony this year, possibly at the city dock. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL

Former Yukon leader dies

WHITEHORSE - Residents are remembering longtime resident and former Yukon Commissioner Doug Bell, who died last week at the age of 94. Bell had lived in the territory for nearly 80 years. THE WHITEHORSE DAILY STAR

Egg production modernized

TERRACE - Daybreak Farms told the city council recently that it is modernizing its egg production facilities. The farm says it will eliminate its chicken manure pits and replace them with system that creates compost pellets that can be used for area gardens. THE TERRACE STANDARD

Knife maker goes on TikTok

HAINES - Local bladesmith Trevor Barrett wanted to give a handmade knife to celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey, so he took to TikTok. His video garnered more than one million views and a response from Ramsey himself. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

Ice bridge melts
