King derby to return
WRANGELL - After a three-year hiatus because of low king salmon returns,
the Chamber of Commerce has announced there will be a king salmon derby
this summer. The shortened derby will run from June 15-30. THE WRANGELL

Graduations to be invitation only
CRAIG - High school graduations on Prince of Wales Island will be by
invitation only. The dates are Klawock (May 19), Hollis (May 21) Craig

First Buckwheat, now Dyea Dave!
SKAGWAY - Residents are remembering "Dyea Dave" McClelland who died last
month at 75. "Dyea Dave" was known for tooling about the community in
his red and white 1960 Metropolitan mini car while wearing a top hat and

Font named after river
PRINCE RUPERT - Microsoft is considering five new fonts to become the
new default font whenever a Microsoft document is opened, replacing
Calibri. One of the finalists is the brand new Skeena, named after the

Musical chairs
HAINES - The former Sheldon Museum director is the new borough deputy
clerk. Helen Alten's hire is only temporary, but borough clerk Allekka
Fullerton is advocating for it be permanent. For the past two years,
Fullerton has been doing the clerk, deputy clerk
and borough manager's jobs. Alten had been let go when the museum board

New director for music fest
SITKA - Kel Dylla is the new executive director the Sitka Music
Festival. The Julliard trained violist has been an arts administrator in
the Seattle area in recent years. The festival is celebrating its 50th

Gold Rush Days cancelled
JUNEAU - Gold Rush Days, the annual Savikko Park celebration, has been
cancelled for this summer. It traditionally takes place in June. THE

KITIMAT - Officials say that the Hirsh Creek and Radley Park campgrounds
will open as scheduled on May 18. But they will not allow people from

Welders trained
CRAIG - Students at the Prince of Wales Vocational and Technical Center
completed a basic welding course in April. Seven students took part in

Term limits may go to vote
PETERSBURG - The Borough Assembly is considering putting the issue of
term limits to a public vote. The Assembly is considering requiring
members to step down after two terms before running again, unless they

Mask incident leads to acquittal
JUNEAU - A local man has been acquitted of a 2020 assault that
reportedly was after an argument over mask wearing. The argument began
in the Fred Meyer checkout line and then moved to the parking lot. At
least one punch was thrown, but there was no audio on
the video and both "combatants" claimed they were acting in

Chief: Input needed on body cams
WRANGELL - Police chief Tom Radke says the department needs more
feedback from the community before implementing a body cam policy for
its officers. Radke says the borough attorney also needs to look at the

Tourism focus narrows
SITKA - The planning commission says it is changing the focus of the
tourism plan it is working on. As a result, the name of the plan will
change from the "Tourism Master Plan" to the "Short Term Tourism Plan."

TERRACE - Three sisters have raised nearly $1,200 for the Ksan House
Society homeless shelter. Chera Bergen and Hali and Dylan Ouellet went
house to house in the community collecting recyclables. They filled five
