Tax increase possible
PETERSBURG
- The borough assembly is pondering a tax increase in FY 2022.
Officials say that a decrease in the assessed property values and state
funding could fuel the increase to balance the budget. THE PETERSBURG

2nd Amendment resolution pulled
HAINES
- A resolution to make the borough a "second amendment sanctuary" has
been pulled by the Borough Assembly. The measure was to be introduced at
a recent meeting but was withdrawn after receiving significant public

Trident won't open facility
WRANGELL
- Trident Seafoods has notified the borough that its local plant will
not reopen this summer. Officials say the projected chum salmon return

Tribe disappointed by herring decision
SITKA
- The Sitka Tribe of Alaska says it is disappointed that a state judge
did not agree with its concerns over the management of the Sitka Sac Roe
Herring Fishery. The tribe believes the state is not adequately
assessing the fishery when setting harvest limits. The group may appeal

Masks not mandated
SKAGWAY
- The borough assembly has settled on a recommendation rather than a
requirement that people were masks in public spaces, including private
businesses. In March, the assembly had made mask use mandatory, but that
was vetoed by Mayor Andrew Cremata. THE SKAGWAY NEWS
First cruise ship on schedule
HAINES
- Residents have marked June 12th on their calendars. The first cruise
ship in more than 20 months will arrive that day, the 175- passenger
American Constellation. It is expected to visit 12 times this summer.

Petersburg High tops in Alaska
PETERSBURG
- U.S. News and World Report says that Petersburg High is top academic
Alaska high school for 2021. Nationally, Petersburg was 904 out of

No COVID at proms
SITKA
- Officials say that proms at both Sitka High and Mount Edgecumbe High
went off without any problems, COVIDwise. They say it is still too early
to give the go-ahead on community events like a Fourth of July parade.

Lifelong SE fisher dies
PELICAN
- Lifelong Southeast resident Nancy Phillips has died at 83. Phillips
was born in Hydaburg and commercial fished with husband Jake for more
than half a century, ranging from San Diego to Kodiak. THE PETERSBURG

Del Rosario retires
JUNEAU
- Gina Del Rosario is retiring as the administrator of the Juneau
Pioneer's Home. Del Rosario has worked for the state for 30 years. THE

Body cams purchased
SKAGWAY
- Officers on the police force will now wear body cams. The borough
recently purchased four body cams for use by the police department. THE

Local DMV won't close
HAINES
- The local department of motor vehicles office will remain open for at
least the next year. The state government had announced plans to close
it and several other offices in smaller communities, but then changed

Community cleans up
WRANGELL
- After a year off because of COVID concerns, the community cleanup
returned last week. Approximately 70 people took part and officials says
that 10 dumpsters were filled. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL
Model A firetruck spruced up
PETERSBURG
- The fire department's Model A fire truck has returned to town after
spending more than a year in Juneau getting a new coat of paint. The
truck was in service in Petersburg from 1930 to 1960. THE PETERSBURG
