JUNEAU - Police investigated a "suspicious" package found
underneath the Capitol skybridge last, Turned out the package contained
not a bomb but a book. Police said the book was not dangerous. THE

Former coach honored
SITKA - Retired Sitka High baseball coach Ed Conway was
honored recently by MaxPreps national website as being the best baseball
coach ever in Alaska. MaxPreps specifically cited Conway for leading
Sitka to several state championships despite the
fact that it sometimes faced school with four and five times the

Home price nears $600,000
WHITEHORSE - The average price of a single-family house has jumped
16 percent in the past year. Officials say that the average house sale

Mural dedicated
HYDABURG - Andrew "Staa" Morrison has painted a mural for the high
school class of 2021. The mural "Haida Gwaii" is on the wall of the

Term limits not on ballot
PETERSBURG - Voters will not decide on term limits for
assemblymembers and the mayor this fall. The borough assembly voted 6-1

Ducklings rescued!
SMITHERS - When Andrew D'Orsa came home walking his dog on Turner
Way one day last week, he saw a mother duck and a duckling hanging out
by a nearby storm drain. When he investigated he found a dozen more
ducklings inside the drain. D'Orsa and several
neighbors used a fishing net to rescue all the ducklings. THE SMITHERS

Humpback whale washes ashore
HAIDA GWAII - A humpback whale named Kayak was found dead near the
mouth of the Tlell River last week. The humpback, estimated at 18 years
old, was first recorded in 2004 and had been spotted up the coast in Southeast Alaska and Hawaii as
well locally and near Vancouver Island over the years. THE HAIDA GWAII OBSERVER
Runner breaks 40-year-old record
JUNEAU - Juneau Douglas High School junior James Connally is the
fastest runner in school history. Connally ran the 100-meter dash in
10.84 seconds recently, breaking a record that had lasted since 1981.

Coast Guardsmen honored
SITKA - Four members of a Coast Guard helicopter crew were awarded
"air medals" for saving the life of fisherman Kurt Broderson of Meyers
Chuck in November in Union Bay. Medals were awarded to Lt. Justin Neal,
pilot; Lt. Jonathan Orthman, copilot; Petty
Officer 2nd Class James Schwader, flight mechanic; and Petty Officer 2nd

NAUKATI - A new womens addiction recovery center opened earlier

COVID outbreak wanes
PRINCE RUPERT - A recent COVID 19 outbreak in Northwest BC seems to
be abating, but officials say it is not over. Residents are still being

Woman arrested for robbery
KITIMAT - A woman has been arrested after allegedly robbing a gas
station with a knife last week. RCMP is trying to see whether there is a
connection to two robberies the previous week in which a knife was

Student to Ivy League
PETERSBURG - When Petersburg High School senior Lydia Martin got
her admission response letter from Columbia University, she delayed
opening it for a day or so. She had already been turned down by two
other colleges and didn't feel like more disappointment.
Finally, she opened it. This fall she will be an earth sciences major at
the New York City Ivy League school. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
Vaccination incentives proposed
CRAIG - The Prince of Wales Chamber of Commerce is thinking about
offering incentives to those who receive the COVID 19 vaccine. Currently
POW has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the state. THE PRINCE OF
