Borough offers prize money for vaccinations
PETERSBURG - The borough is offering $10,000 in prizes this month to
residents who get vaccinated for COVID 19. Sleeves Up Petersburg will be
offering several $500 prizes as well as a $4,000 grand prize. THE

Pool closure angers user
HAINES - Pool users are protesting a proposed three-month pool closure
set for this summer. The borough wants to shut down the facility in
order to save month. It would be the third straight year with lengthy
closures for renovations in 2019 and COVID concerns

Skultka wins Derby
SITKA - Charles Skultka Sr. is the winner of the two-weekend king salmon
derby with a 36.8 pound king. Patrick Davis finished second after

Look out for Loki!
PRINCE RUPERT - Residents are being asked to keep an "eagle eye" for
Loki, a year-old female bald eagle that has already had a checkered life
including surviving a run-in with a power line when she was only a few
weeks old. A tracking device indicates that
the eagle is in the Prince Rupert area. She was born at a wildlife
reserve near Vancouver but she already been tracked as far north as Southeast Alaska and the Stikine River, and as far south as Hoquiam, Washington. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW
institute site redevelopment moves ahead
WRANGELL - The Planning Commission has taken an important step in the
long-running process to redevelop the old Wrangell Institute property.
The preliminary plat is the first phase for the Shoemaker Bay
Subdivision II development with includes both residential

Railway preps for reduced 2021 season
SKAGWAY - The White Pass Railway and the union representing its workers
are heading to arbitration over the 27 permanent job cuts the line made
earlier this year. In the meantime, the line is looking to hire back 17
employees as the line plans to restart some

Man dies in Skeena flood
TERRACE - Flooding along the Skeena River has apparently led to the
death of a New Remo man. Officials say the unidentified 73-year-old man
was found in the flooded basement of his home. THE TERRACE STANDARD
Lende new Writer Laureate
HAINES - Local writer Heather Lende has been chosen as the State Writer
Laureate for 2021-2023. Lende has written four books based on her life

SKAGWAY - Newsweek magazine has named the Skagway school district as the
best district in Alaska. One hundred and forty-one students attend the
Skagway School, preschool through grade 12. THE SKAGWAY NEWS

PETERSBURG - US News and World Reports has named Petersburg High School
as the top public high school in the state. Petersburg ranked 904th out
of 17,000 schools in the nation.
Science Center planned
HAINES - Two residents have formed a non-profit to create a Haines
Science Center. Steven Villano and Steve Wishstar. Both are residents of
the Beach Road area that was devastated by a landslide in December. THE

Port gets mammoth crane
PRINCE
RUPERT - The largest crane in Canada has arrived at the DP World
container port after a month-long journey across the Pacific. The
300-foot crane has an outreach of 25
containers making it capable of unloading the largest container ships in

Luhr wins state titles
PETERSBURG - High school senior Aiden Luhr is a two-time state champion.
Luhr won the 100-meter dash and the high jump competitions. He

HAINES - Sophomore Eric Gillham and senior Haley Boron are state track
and field champions. Gillham won the discus throw at the state meet and
