SITKA - The brand-new director of the Sitka Arts Festival is now the
former director of the festival. Kel Dylla resigned last week after
barely three months on the job. Dylla said that she and her family plan

Smith reelected
KITIMAT -Crystal Smith has been reelected as the Chief Councillor of the
Haisla Nation. Smith received 347 votes in the recent election, easily

Only attendees can graduate
PETERSBURG - The school district has clarified the policy regarding
participation in the high school senior graduation ceremony. Last year,
the district allowed home school students to attend the ceremony but has
now made it clear that was a one-time event

Company throws party for town
TENAKEE SPRINGS - Residents enjoyed free food and free plane rides last
week as Alaska Seaplanes put on a community picnic to celebrate adding a
new plane to its fleet. With the addition of the Cessna 208 Caravan
floatplane the company now has 15 aircraft.

Rainforest Islander for sale
WRANGELL - The Rainforest Islander boat is for sale again. Eric Yancy
has decided to retire from his transportation business, Breakaway Ferry
and Freight. The Islander had been brought to Wrangell as part of an
attempt to provide service between Coffman Cove,
Wrangell and Petersburg. That service ended in 2016. THE WRANGELL

TERRACE - Fewer people are working Northwest British Columbia but the
unemployment rate is dropping. Officials say the size of the available
workforce shrank more than the decline in the number of people willing
to work, causing the unemployment rate to drop

How to spend $1 million
SITKA - The Borough Assembly has begun discussions on how to use the $1
million Sitka has received from Norwegian Cruise Lines. A variety of
projects have been proposed, but thus far the Assembly seems inclined to
hold onto the money and see how the summer
economy shakes out before committing the windfall in any specific

SKAGWAY - The Borough Assembly has accepted the $2 million grant from
Norwegian Cruise Lines but appears split on what to do with it. Several
projects have been proposed as have direct payments to local businesses

Bikers rally for bullied teen
KITIMAT - Several dozen members of various northwest motorcycle clubs
gathered in Kitimat last week to honor the memory of 15-year-old
Diversity Morgan who died earlier this month. Morgan was a transgender
teen who was bullied before his death, officials say.

Save cash, not time
HAINES - A Seattle Company, led by two 22-year-old entrepreneurs, hopes
to make Haines a regional shipping hub for Canada and the Interior.
OpenTug hopes to create what it calls an Uber or Airbnb for cargo
shipping, the idea being to tie shippers who are sending
non-time-sensitive cargo with existing barge companies that have space

SITKA- A man and a woman were reported talking shortly after midnight at
the corner of Sawmill Creek Road and Indian River Road. Police

Teachers get raise
PETERSBURG - The Associated Teachers of Petersburg will receive a one
percent raise for each of the next three years. Negotiations with the
school district began in February and concluded in April. THE PETERSBURG

New police chief hired.
SKAGWAY - Former acting police chief Jerry Reddick is the new permanent
chief of police. The Borough Assembly voted 4-2 to hire Reddick who
replaces Ray Legget who was told to quit or be fired last fall. Some
assemblymembers were concerned about Reddick's proposed
