KITIMAT - A donnybrook may be brewing as the KItimat District Council is split over whether to allow a second semi-pro hockey team in the community. Four members supported the proposal from the Greater Metro Hockey League for a Kitimat team, while three voted no because Kitimat already has a team in the Central Interior League, the Ice Demons. Local grapplers top state
WRANGELL - Ryan Rooney and Liana Carney are state champion wrestlers. Rooney won the 160-pound class and Carney won the 135 title. It was Carney's second state title. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL
ATM crash kills teen
TERRACE - Officials are investigating the crash of an ATV that killed a teenager last week. RCMP says that officers saw three people riding an ATV without helmets and tried to stop the ATV but that the ATV eluded them. Later in the evening the ATV was involved in a crash that caused the death of one of the riders. THE TERRACE STANDARD
Longtime piano tuner retires
SITKA - After more than half a century of tuning and repairing pianos throughout Alaska, Virgil Hale is retiring. Hale, 81, says it is finally time to stick closer to his home in Missouri. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL
Class holds normal graduation
PETERSBURG - The Class of 2021 graduated in a traditional ceremony before friends and family, but it was also live streamed. Officials say that 20 of the 28 graduates plan to attend college. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
State of emergency extended
WHITEHORSE
- The Yukon Provincial Government has extended the COVID 19 state of
emergency for the rest of the summer. The previous extension would have
run out on May 31, but last week the government added another 90 days to

No more mad motoring on Mitkof!
PETERSBURG -Tim Koeneman is hoping that his nearly 20-year investment turns out to be a good one when he sells it this summer. In 2003, Koeneman purchased a 1967 Shelby American GT 350. He has had the car completely restored to what it would have been like coming out of the factory. Similar cars have sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars in recent years. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
Vaccinations approach 70 percent

Salmon derby returns

WHITEHORSE
- Things are apparently slowing down in The Wilderness City. Officials
are looking at lowering the average speed limit in town from 50 kph to
40 kph. That's from 31 mph to 24 mph. School zones will remain at 30 kph

Access project ends in October
PETERSBURG - The long awaited Kake "access" road will be completed in October, officials say. The 39-mile road will almost connect Kake with Petersburg, but it will bring access to Twelvemile Creek on Kupreanof Island. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
