SKAGWAY - The Yoda of the Borough Assembly, Vice Mayor Steve Burnham Jr.  has resigned from the assembly. His resignation letter was brief.  "At an end my time on assembly is, and not short enough was it." THE SKAGWAY NEWS

Travel ban lifted

HAIDA GWAII - The ban on visitor travel to the islands was lifted on July 1. Officials said that between 75 and 80 percent of the island residents have been vaccinated and that is why the travel ban from March of 2020 is no longer necessary. THE HAIDA GWAII OBSERVER

New heliskiing firm turned down

HAINES - The borough has denied a permit application for a new operation from an Idaho company. The existing companies say there isn't enough room for more companies in the market. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

Hot, but not too hot

PETERSBURG - Local businesses are pessimistic of the future according to a survey by the Southeast Conference. More than 30 local businesess were surveyed and 79 percent were concerned about the future of the local economy. THE PETERSBURG PILOT

Former harbormaster dies

SKAGWAY - Residents are remembering 40-year-resident and former Harbormaster Ken Russo who died recently. He was also an avid harmonica player. THE SKAGWAY NEWS

Armory for sale

WRANGELL - The old National Guard Armory building on Second Avenue is for sale. The building was erected in 1981 and was used until 2017 when the National Guard ended its local presence. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL

Even public safety not safe

HAINES - The borough public safety commission had its zoom meeting "bombed" last week by a "bad actor" who kept shouting obscenities and racial slurs despite attempts to mute him. Officials say they are adding security measures for future meetings. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

Man arrested after car chase

PRINCE RUPERT - A 33-year-old Prince Rupert man is facing six charges after a high-speed chase on Highway 16 between Prince Rupert and Terrace last week. The event began at a checkpoint at Butz Rapids and continued to the Shames River Bridge, where the man engaged in fisticuffs with Mounties before he was subdued. THE PRINCE RUPERT NORTHERN VIEW

'Dean' of the fleet dies

PETERSBURG - Lifelong Petersburg gillnetter Arnold Enge died last month at his home on Sing Lee Alley. The 73-year-old was considered the "dean" of the Petersburg fishing fleet and a key member of the Pacific Salmon Commission for many years . He was usually the first person to ice skate on Blind Slough each winter. THE PETERSBURG PILOT

Hunter fined for bear kill

WRANGELL - An Oregon hunter was fined last month for illegally shooting a black bear on Kupreanof Island. The 55-year-old was fined $300 for not having the correct permit after he reported harvesting the bear to Fish and Game. THE WRANGELL SENTINEL

No burning, no dousing

TERRACE - Officials have banned campfires in the region because of the high fire danger. At the same time, they have banned use of sprinklers because of an area water shortage. THE TERRACE STANDARD

Wood/stone carver dies

HAINES - Longtime local carpenter, contractor and wood/stone artist, Judd Mullady has died at 78. Mullady originally sold wood sculptures on Creek Street in Ketchikan in the late 1970s before moving to Haines. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS
