- Residents can't agree on the pronunciation of "LeConte" as in the
glacier. But in 1962, a relative of the namesake of the glacier,
geologist Joseph LeConte, visited town and told the Petersburg Press

Administrator resigns

BAY - The community is looking for a new city administrator after Les
Carter resigned in early June. City Clerk Teri Feibel is the acting

Miss Alaska developing show
JUNEAU
- Alyssa London, Miss Alaska in 2017, is continuing on her mission to
tell accurate stories of contemporary Native life. The Southeast
Tlingit Native is part of a group developing a series of programs
called "Culture Story." The project is supported by Alaska Airlines,

Fire fines to top $1,000
PRINCE
RUPERT- Officials say that anyone starting a fire in violation of a
region wide ban will face a large fine. The fines will begin at $1,100.

Relative Gloom Index?
HAINES
- Local meteorologist Jim Green has developed a "Relative Gloom Index."
Based on his calculations, May was gloomier than normal, but not record
breaking "gloom." The index is based on the amount of rainfall, cloud

No gas tax hike
SITKA
- Two members of the Borough Assembly are withdrawing their proposal
for a vote on a 3 percent gas tax increase. They say that after
researching the issue further they have decided the tax would be too

COVE - Dayna Jo Johnson has been appointed to the United States Coast
Guard Academy. Johnson - a 2020 Craig High graduate, spent the last year

JUNEAU - A 53-year-old man was arrested for third degree assault on the Brotherhood Bridge recently. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE
Neighbors fault venue
HAINES
- A property in Viking Cove is again under scrutiny for hosting events.
Some say the events, like a recent wedding with 175 guests, violate the
property permit, but the planning commission says the permit only
relates to the number of people - 20 - that are allowed to stay
overnight on the property. Neighbors had similar complaints in 2015,

Jets return to airport
TERRACE
- Jets have returned to the Northwest Regional Airport. Air Canada is
now operating Airbus A320 jets on its Vancouver to Terrace runs three
days week, replacing smaller turboprop planes that have flown the route

Brothers row 360 miles
PETERSBURG
- Jake and Jens Hammer took part recently in the Washington 360 boat
race in Puget Sound. In a nod to family heritage they rowed a 19-foot
traditional Norwegian giet or goat boat. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
New realty opens

- Melissa and Ron Matecki have formed Prince of Wales Island Realty.
The couple had previously worked for Coastal Real Estate for five years.

Elliott wins Ripinsky race
HAINES
- Local resident Sarah Elliott finished first in the annual Fourth of
July Ripinsky Run on Sunday. Elliott finished with a time of 32:13.
Behind her was Chad Bieberich, who completed the run in 36:33. THE

Paraglider "sticks" the landing
JUNEAU
- A paraglider on Mt. Roberts had to be rescued after getting tangled
up in a tree recently. Officials say she was stuck 60 feet above the
ground not far from the Mt. Robert Nature Center. THE JUNEAU EMPIRE
