Boro faults census numbers
WRANGELL
- The 2020 Census says that the borough population dropped 10 percent
between 2010 and 2020, but local officials say they don't believe the
numbers. They are asking Alaska's Congressional Delegation to get

Man says he is homeless for smoking
PRINCE
RUPERT - Merve Gorda, 68, says he has been living in his wheelchair on
the streets for the past week because he was kicked out of subsidized
senior housing for smoking. BC Housing declined to discuss specifics but

F&G employee mauled; bear killed
SITKA
- A Fish and Game employee was mauled by a bear on Chichagof Island
last week but did not suffer life threatening injuries. The bear was

Company packs 100,000 cases
PETERSBURG
- The steam whistle at the Ocean Beauty seafood plant rattled windows
downtown a couple of weeks ago. The whistle was blown to announce the
fact the processor had packed 100,000 cases of pink salmon, an important

Haines school: Mask up
HAINES
- Students returning to the Haines School will have to wear masks this
fall. Officials say the requirement will be reevaluated after the

City gets homeless grant
TERRACE
- The city has received an $160,000 provincial grant to help deal with
homeless issues. Some of the money will be used to provide additional
port-a-potties in the downtown area and part will be used to hire
someone to work with the city and various other groups to ensure that
homeless people are receiving services and help from the community. THE

Football back in Juneau
JUNEAU
- High school football is back in the Capital City for the first time
in two years. Juneau defeated Colony High of Palmer 53-12. The "Huskies"
feature players from both Juneau Douglas High and Thunder Mountain

Chamber loses exempt status
HAINES
- The Haines Chamber of Commerce has lost its tax-exempt status from
the federal government. Officials say the Chamber failed to file tax
returns as required for the past three years. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS
Cancer costs covered
PRINCE
RUPERT -Novartis Phamaceuticals announced last week that it is covering
the medication costs of a local man with Stage-4 lung cancer. Mark
Bell's medication costs are estimated at more than $16,500 a month,

31-pounder wins derby
JUNEAU
- Tiffany Listberger is the apparent winner of the 75th annual Golden
North Salmon Derby with a 31.7-pound king salmon according to the
derby’s provisional results. Derby officials say Listberger’s fish is

- The borough assembly has asked staff to look at adding a Deputy

- Students returned to school in Juneau earlier this month with masks

Power cable nearly complete
PETERSBURG - Replacement of a power cable between Woronkofski and Vank islands is nearly complete. The Southeast Alaska Power Agency says the undersea part is done and the shoreside connections are being completed. THE PETERSBURG PILOT
