Two survive plane crash

WHITEHORSE - Two area residents surveyed a small plane crash last week in subdivision near the Alaska Highway. Officials say the unnamed pilot was practicing "circuits" at the Cousins Airstrip when his plane lost power and crashed into some trees near the runway. THE WHITEHORSE DAILY STAR

Second resident dies of COVID

RCMP investigates rail fatality

TERRACE - The RCMP is investigating the death of a woman near Kalum Street. Police say the woman walked onto some railway tracks and the approaching train was unable to stop in time. THE TERRACE STANDARD

Vaccination proof required to cross border

HAINES - Residents are looking forward to the border with Canada opening up next week. Canada will allow travelers with proof to vaccination to cross, but they have to get another COVID test if they intend on staying in Canada beyond 72 hours. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

Housing market booms

KITIMAT - The housing market in Kitimat is booming in 2021, according to the Province. In the first six months of 2021 realtors in the Kitimat area sold 121 properties worth $43.8 million, compared to 48 properties worth $15 million in the same period in 2020. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL

SITKA - A woman from out of town called police to ask them to check on her daughter who hadn't been in touch for more than a week. Police contacted the daughter who said her phone had been dead. THE DAILY SITKA SENTINEL

Mounties hope to jumpstart cold case

WHITEHORSE - The RCMP is asking members of the public if they have any information relating to the death of Angel Carlick who was murdered in 2007. Carlick was last seen alive on Main Street with a group of people. Her body was found several months later on Pilot Mountain. THE WHITEHORSE DAILY

Just don't call it 'Strip-a-palooza!'

SKAGWAY - More than 35 local and regional performers are going to take part next week in the three-day "Skagway Expose," an "art collective" gathering that will feature burlesque, pole performances, jazz and blues music and other events. Institute property to be surveyed

WRANGELL - The Borough's plan to subdivide the former Wrangell Institute property is on hold until a thorough site inspection takes place. Mayor Steve Prysunka says the inspection is being made to locate possible cultural artifacts or human remains on the site from the boarding school which operated from 1932 to 1975. TERRACE - Residents were encouraged to take precautions last week when a "heat warning" was issued for the community. Temps of 31 degrees Celsius (87 degrees Fahrenheit) were recorded. THE TERRACE STANDARD

Former resident remembered

HAINES - Residents are remembering former resident Robert Lawson who grew up in Haines and later served in the military - he was awarded a Bronze Star in Iraq - and was also an Alaska State Trooper. Lawson died recently from COVID 19 in North Dakota at 48. THE CHILKAT VALLEY NEWS

Water spray proposed for park

KITIMAT -The District of Kitimat is looking into a water spray facility at Lions Park. Construction would start in 2022 and the cost would range from $380,000 to $844,000 depending on what features are included. THE KITIMAT NORTHERN SENTINEL

SEARHC offers to take over clinic

SKAGWAY - The Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) has offered to take over control of the local Dahl Medical Center. Because of COVID and other issues, the DMC has lost 75 percent of its staff since the beginning of the year. THE SKAGWAY NEWS
