Writers' conference cancelled
SKAGWAY
- Concern over a statewide spike in COVID 19 cases has caused the
annual North Words Symposium to be cancelled. Last year's symposium was
held virtually, but officials say that it is too late to transition this
year's festival, which was scheduled to be in person, to be switched to

57 pounder wins POW Derby

- A 57.6-pound king is the winner of the Craig/Klawock Salmon Derby.

Peratrovich mural completed

- A 60-foot mural honoring Alaska civil rights leader Elizabeth
Peratrovich is complete. The mural, by Crystal Worl, is on the side of

Smelter negotiations back on
KITIMAT
- Negotiations have resumed in Vancouver as Rio Tinto and the Unifor
union are looking to resolve a strike at that Kitimat aluminum smelter
that began on July 25. More than 900 workers are striking. THE KITIMAT

- A passenger at the airport wearing a reindeer hide was reported as

No to seasonal sales tax
HAINES
- The borough assembly has said no to a seasonal sales tax, at least
for the time being. The assembly referred the issue back to finance

Dog parks planned
TERRACE
- The city government is working with Rotary to get grant funding for
two new off-leash dog parks. Just under $90,000 is being sought to build

Home is where the equity is
WHITEHORSE
- Home prices in the Yukon are continuing to spiral upward. The average
home price is now slightly more than $650,000, a a jump of $60,000

Taiya River floods
SKAGWAY
- Recent heavy rains brought the Taiya River just short of its all-time
crest. The 19-foot crest caused flooding in Dyea. THE SKAGWAY NEWS

- A consultant hired by the town has determined there are too many
different departments reporting directly to Chief Administrative Officer
Diana Plouffe and that several currently independent departments need

- City Clerk Emily Deach is the new deputy borough manager. Deach will

More empty shelves
HAINES - Like most of the communities in Southeast,
Haines is seeing empty store shelves because of supply issues. Local
officials also say that inflation since last year - pegged at more than 6
percent - is making it harder for locals to afford what is on the
