- Residents on the north coast did not feel the jolt when a 6.5
earthquake was reported in the ocean south of Kitimat last week. Why
not? It didn't happen. Officials are now saying a computer glitch caused

Sockeye run surprisingly strong
HAINES
- Fishers in Lutak Inlet saw a bumper run of sockeye in late August
when more than 24,000 fish returned. The late surge caught officials and
fishers by surprise. The "blue backs" were also larger than has been

Relief funds parceled out
SKAGWAY
- The borough assembly has decided how to spend the $2 million Skagway
received from Norwegian Cruise Lines for COVID relief. Approximately $1.
2 million will go to small business relief, while other amounts will go
to the Food Bank, the Traditional Council, utility relief and

RUPERT - Officials say that students being dropped off at schools face a
significant danger, from the parents of other students. Province wide
nearly more than 70 students are injured each year by parents

- A woman called from out of town to report her son appeared to be
missing. Officers talked to the son, who said he was busy working but

Arx and Sparx
SMITHERS
-The Smithers Senior Secondary School received funding to run an Arx
and Sparx camp this past summer. The idea was to familiarize students
with the school's welding trades before school started in the fall.
During the camp, students were taught formline for their welding art

Former Councilmember dies
WRANGELL - Residents are remembering Wilma Stokes, 92, a lifelong Southeast
resident who died recently. Stokes was a longtime employee of the
Wrangell Institute and served on the Wrangell City Council. THE WRANGELL

- Officials say there have been numerous recent reports of people
driving ATVs and other off-road vehicles through the Kitimat River,
damaging the salmon spawning beds and destroying recently laid salmon

Local lifeguard saves man in Anchorage
HAINES
- A Haines Pool lifeguard is being credited with saving a surfer in
Turnagain Arm near Anchorage earlier this summer. Adam de Boer had
fallen off his board and was caught in the tidal bore current.
Fortunately, Kaitlyn Tolin was just 40 yards away and helped him onto

Ferry schedule extended
HAIDA
GWAII - BC Ferries has extended the summer ferry schedule to the
islands for the month of September. The ferry system said the extension
was to clear backlog because COVID issues and ferry maintenance limited

-The Mitkof Island Yacht Club is being formed. The club's mission is to
promote safe boating practices, civic pride and promote marine

WHITEHORSE
- The Yukon Government will purchase more locally grown food through a
three-year pilot program announced last week. Officials say the idea is

Residential parking crackdown announced
SKAGWAY
- Residents are forewarned, the police will begin ticketing cars in
residential areas that haven't been moved in 30 days. Trailers, boats
and RVs are allowed 24 hours. All vehicles require current registration

Urban garden opens
PRINCE
RUPERT - An urban garden developed by Metlakatla First Nation and
EcoTrust Canada has opened in the downtown. Officials hope that
Sndoyntga Lax Kx’een Maxłaxaała will encourage more food sustainability
