drop-in center in the Ocean Center Mall in September. The center will be

Ocean Beauty tops 200,000 cases
PETERSBURG
- The Ocean Beauty Seafood plant has now topped 200,000 cases of pink
salmon. Officials say that is the highest amount the facility has canned

151 homeless each day
WHITEHOUSE
- The numbers from the most recent community homeless survey are not
good. In any 24-hour period, 151 people are "homeless" in the community.
An additional 100 people are in a "transitional" living situation. THE

Strike blocks cargo ship
KITIMAT
-A Norwegian cargo ship remains stranded in Kitimat by the month-long
strike against the Rio Tinto Aluminum Smelter. The MV Indiana cannot
leave unless it is refueled, and oil company workers are refusing to

No mask mandate
WRANGELL
- The borough assembly has decided not to issue a mask mandate. The
assembly voted 6-1 against a mandate but authorized a public information
campaign promoting mask use and other safety measures against COVID 19.

Trees lost to flood protection
TELKWA
- In order to make flood protection improvements to Riverside and Eddy
parks, the village had to chop down a large number of trees in Eddy
Park. Residents are unhappy at the action, but village officials say it
was necessary to get the federal funding for the project. THE SMITHERS

SITKA
- A woman reported falling out of kayak while trying to take a picture.
She made it safely to a rock near the airport runway and was picked up

Overdose advisory
TERRACE
- Northern Health has issued an overdose advisory because a "deep blue
crystal substance" being sold on the street as heroin has caused a spike
in overdoses in Terrace and Smithers. THE TERRACE STANDARD
Flyover honors health care workers
PRINCE
RUPERT - The skies over the Northwest were a little noisy for a couple
of hours last week as a Royal Canadian Airforce CF-18 did a flyover of
Prince Rupert, Terrace, Kitimat and Smithers to salute front line health

COVID numbers rise
KITIMAT
- COVID 19 cases are on the rise in the Northern Health Area. Officials
say the rise is because vaccination rates in the area (between 60 and
70 percent) are lower than the province as a whole (82 percent). THE

Sailboat goes aground
SITKA
- Personnel from the Sitka Coast Guard responded to a grounded sailboat
in Slocum Arm, 30 miles north of Sitka last week. The Coast Guard says
the two crew members were in good shape and the 38-foot sailboat George

Inquest in 2016 death
TERRACE
- A BC Coroners Jury inquest has started into the 2016 death of
Nicholas Jeppesen. A previous investigation cleared the RCMP of
responsibility. Jeppesen had been tased by officers before he cut his

Yukon ends emergency
WHITEHORSE
- The Yukon Territory has officially ended its state of emergency over
the COVID 19 epidemic. There are now no official limits on gatherings,
